Al Fursan, the United Arab Emirates Air Force demonstration team at Farnborough today. I was happy to see the team fly their display with all seven aircraft today. It is also a first time seeing their new Chinese Hongdu L-15 aircraft.

You might be wondering why I am posting about a pub in Cambridge City.
You see I had read about the Eagle Pub in Cambridge. The second oldest pub in the city. The place where DNA double-helix was discovered by Francis Crick and James Watson. They even have a beer to celebrate this discovery by Crick and Watson, called Eagle’s DNA. And also their RAF Bar!
So while we were sightseeing in Cambridge I suggested a refreshment stop at this pub. It is in the centre of the city. A short walk from the Mathematical Bridge.
We walked in to find a normal looking pub until we entered the rear bar. The RAF bar. Here the walls and ceiling are full of aircrew signatures, squadron patches and stickers. An amazing sight for an aviation enthusiast. The tradition of aircrew writing on the walls and ceiling dates back to WW2, believed to have been started by RAF Flight Sergeant PE Turner. It is great to see this tradition continues today!
Pints ordered, we sat outside in the sunshine while I occasionally ducked inside the bar and grabbed a picky or two of the aviation memorabilia.

Migtastic!

The marvellous sight of the only flying Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17F (Polish-licensed Lim-5) rehearsing for this weekends Summer Airshow at Duxford. Her afterburning VK-1F engine leaving a streak of flame in her wake.

Built in Poland under license in 1958, she is operated today by FUBAR Aviation based in Poland.

The Fighters!

Shuttleworth’s Supermarine Spitfire MK Vc AR501 leads Republic P-47D Thunderbolt "Nellie", North American P-51D Mustang “Frances Dell” and the Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-4 "Red 12” over Old Warden at Festival of Flight 2026.

Another highlight from RIAT 25 was the arrival from the RNLAF of their pair of Boeing CH-47F Chinooks. The Chinook first flew in September 1961. Sixty five years on the design still looks modern, it has such presence on the ground and in the sky with its size and distinctive bladeslap sound.
Initially I was a little disappointed when I heard these aircraft were cleared to approach runway 09 rather than 27…due to other traffic….which was a RN Merlin. I assumed they would park at the western end and we wouldn’t see them down the Eastern End. However I was delighted to be wrong when I heard them instructed to air taxi down the runway to the 27 threshold for their parking. They looked and sounded amazing in formation approaching us. This turned out to be a nice photo opportunity in the end.
Both airframes, D483 and D473, are from 298 Squadron, RNLAF.

One of my highlights of RIAT is the variety of aircraft types and air forces which visit each year.

On the Thursday afternoon this Eurocopter AS365 Dauphin arrived for static display at RIAT 2025. She is from the Lithuania Air Force Sraigtasparniu Eskadrile (Helicopter Flight) based at Šiauliai Air Base. She was a nice addition to last year’s aircraft line up.

One benefit of this recent hot weather is I am finding time to look back at my images from previous airshows. So that’s all good then.

The stunning Lockheed F-104G Starfighter (D-8022) suspended from the ceiling at National Military Museum (Nationaal Militair Museum) in Soesterberg Air Base.

The Starfighter was designed by Kelly Johnson at Lockheed in the early 1950’s. She was the first production aircraft to reach Mach 2.0 and climb to 100,000 feet.

D-8022 and her sister aircraft D-8013 were the very first Dutch-assembled F-104Gs, delivered in December 1962. They were officially handed over to the RNLAF 306 Squadron at Twenthe Air Base in the January 1963.
