It’s my birthday in a couple of weeks and if at any point in our shared acquaintance you’d have had a drink to celebrate with me, I’m asking if you’d consider donating the price of a pint or a glass of wine to this very special fundraiser.

I met Mason while taking photos at Rachel House, a children’s hospice in Kinross, Scotland. I absolutely fell in love with this little boy. He’s six years old — a miracle in its own right because doctors said he wouldn’t make it to his fifth birthday. He was born eight weeks premature and spent the first two months of his life on a CPAP machine in the NICU during the height of the pandemic.

Shortly after being given the green light to go home, he took a turn for the worse and was rushed by ambulance to the Royal Hospital for Children & Young People in Edinburgh. He stayed there for two years and was diagnosed with two separate conditions.

The first, hydrocephalus, is the build up of excess cerebrospinal fluid in the brain’s cavities, creating potentially fatal pressure on the brain tissue. The second, a form of infantile leukodystrophy, is a rare inherited disorder that affects the brain, causing a progressive loss of physical and, later, mental skills.

Tragically, the latter is a terminal condition and Mason is living on borrowed time. To date he has had close to 50 brain surgeries in an attempt to extend his life expectancy. It’s impossible to imagine the suffering this tiny boy has been through. He can’t walk without assistance and his speech can be difficult to understand. And yet, he is a ray of sunshine who loved posing for photos with his sister and Mum. He high fives everyone he meets and he nearly broke my heart when he opened his arms for a bear hug when I said goodbye.

His mum Tracey started a GoFundMe to raise money to buy Mason an electric wheelchair for when his mobility declines to the point where assisted walking is no longer possible. It would mean the world if we could use my birthday as an excuse to boost the fund and make this dream a reality.

Meet the inspiration behind the business: My gran, Sheelah.

For 33 years she was always there, unfailingly on my side. My memories of her are so diverse, from jumping in puddles and singing madly in the rain together when I was a toddler to seeing in the New Year together, just the two of us, the year my grandpa died and I’d just broken up with my boyfriend.

She was tough (seriously, we spent 10 years thinking we were about to say goodbye to her as she battled every illness from cancer to MRSA and somehow survived - I really thought she might live forever). She was funny (sometimes unintentionally, like the time her false teeth got stuck in a baguette in Pret A Manger 😂).

She was so, so present. She taught me how to make epic chocolate birthday cakes. She left My Little Ponies on my bed when I stayed at her house and she came to every concert and show I ever performed in and she loved my babies so much that her joy in them was able to shine through her dementia when little else could.

She taught me to value time spent with our older generations. She taught me to ask the questions and listen to the stories that revealed who she was before she was frail and grey. A girl who watched Spitfires fly overhead during the Battle of Britain. A teen who rode home from nights out on the milk cart. A wife, a mum, a grandmother, a best friend.

After she passed away, that empty space in my calendar that was once reserved for our weekly phone calls mirrored the feeling of absence that eventually triggered the idea for this business. I love these photos and others like them that remind me of everything she meant to me. I hope that my work gives the same gift to other families.

Love you Bat. Hope you’re enjoying watching all this from up there.

If I’m honest, there’s a lot about getting older that’s scary. But moments like these between care home residents and the people who look after them give me hope that there will be joy and genuine affection, too, amid any uncertainty.

For the past six months I’ve been volunteering at Pickleball for All, an initiative run by - a charity whose mission is to reduce loneliness in later life - and . Our sessions at in Perth, Scotland are aimed at those aged 75 and older who want to get out, be more active and meet new people in a fun and safe environment.

Despite the poor sound quality (the pickleball court is loud!), I think these interviews with star players Veronica and Pat show just how meaningful these sessions are for those who attend. Thanks also to Sandra McCrae from Pickleball Scotland for her insights into how the game can be adapted to suit people of all abilities.

Some favourite shots from yesterday’s photo session at New Rannoch Day Centre in Perth. Run by PKC Day Opportunities, this amazing facility gives older people with dementia a safe space in which to socialise and spend time while their family members are at work. Jane Morrison from the Crieff Cancer Research UK shop was kind enough to loan me some stunning accessories for the shoot. I always find that an element of dressing up makes the experience more fun for everyone and helps people to relax in front of the camera. Don’t they all look incredible?

This week I’ve been visiting care homes across Perthshire introducing myself to potential clients, so I figured it’s probably about time I do the same on here.

I’m Jess. I grew up in England but spent much of my adult life living in South Africa. My family and I (husband, two kids, a one-eyed rescue dog and a comfortably chubby cat) moved to Crieff in Scotland in 2021.

I’ve been lots of things: shark-diving guide, scuba instructor, travel writer. Photography has been a passion since I got my first plastic, polar-bear shaped disposable camera aged 7.

I started JJM Later Life Photography at the beginning of 2026. It’s a bit of a love letter to my gran, Sheelah, who taught me to treasure time spent with older people. I hope my photos shine a light on the beauty of later life and help tell the story of lives well lived.

Thank you for being here, and please do follow along.

Last week I had the absolute honour of taking photos for gorgeous Harlow, her lovely mum and devoted big brother Bailey. Harlow is the bravest little person I’ve ever met. After a cardiac arrest at 11 months, doctors said she wouldn’t reach her first birthday. We took these pictures to celebrate this little girl, with her warrior spirit, love of music and impossibly long lashes, turning three years old.

I met Harlow and her family at the incredible Rachel House, one of two hospices run by Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS, ). I cannot speak highly enough of this space and the people who work there, who dedicate themselves to providing loving care and moments of respite to those who need it most. I hope to volunteer my services there regularly going forwards.

All photos are of course posted with permission.
