Many Happy Returns to HRH The Princess Royal, who celebrates her 76th birthday today. 🎂
I’ve been very fortunate over the years to photograph Princess Anne at a number of events and occasions — sometimes in a formal capacity, and occasionally from a news perspective.
What has always struck me is how hard she works, but also how she engages with people.
I’ve been close enough on several occasions to hear her speaking with people, and she really does listen. She doesn't simply offer the expected polite response and move on. She asks questions, challenges things when appropriate and, importantly, remembers people.
One thing I particularly enjoy seeing is when she makes connections between people. I’ve heard her talking to someone and then say, “But do you know…” before mentioning someone else she has met previously and introducing them.
That, to me, is what a good networker does — listens, remembers and makes connections that can help others.
Princess Anne is also wonderfully good at responding off the cuff. Her instant replies during speeches and presentations can be fascinating to listen to — and equally enjoyable to capture through a camera.
At 76, many people would be thinking about retirement…
I’m not convinced Princess Anne knows the meaning of the word! 😊
She continues to give so much of her time and energy to others, and we are very fortunate to have her doing so.
So, Happy Birthday, Ma'am. I hope today you get the chance to have a little rest, celebrate and enjoy your special day.
