What volunteer roles exist in UK drone racing?
(Part of our “Community & People” series)
Organised drone racing relies on volunteers. From local club events to national competitions, volunteers play a central role in making racing possible.

Within the framework supported by the British Drone Racing Association (BDRA), volunteer roles often include:
- Event organisers — planning and coordinating competitions
- Race directors and officials — overseeing formats, fairness, and delivery
- Marshals and course support — helping events run safely and smoothly
- Technical support roles — timing systems, livestreams, and race management tools
- Club volunteers — supporting setup, logistics, and community activity

In addition, the BDRA committee itself is made up of volunteers who support the sport through governance, planning, rules development, coordination with clubs and organisers, and ongoing development work across the UK racing community. Many volunteers are also active pilots and all contributions are seen as valuable.

As part of the Community & People section of our year-long weekly series, this post highlights how volunteers, including the committee, support safe, structured, and enjoyable drone racing across the UK.

How are drone racing events sanctioned?
(Part of our “Education & Safety” series)

Event sanctioning helps ensure that organised drone racing competitions operate within a clear, consistent framework.

Within the structure provided by the British Drone Racing Association (BDRA), sanctioning is intended to confirm that an event:
- Operates within recognised class rules (where applicable)
- Follows agreed competition formats
- Applies appropriate safety standards
- Has clear organisational responsibility
- Aligns with the wider framework of UK drone racing

Sanctioning does not replace organiser responsibility. Event organisers remain responsible for the safe and lawful running of their event. Instead, sanctioning provides structure, clarity, and national consistency for pilots and clubs.

As the BDRA continues developing its Safety Management System and alignment with wider aviation safety priorities, sanctioning will form an important part of supporting proportionate and transparent event governance. The BDRA is currently working on better ways in which we can support sanctioning of events and allow organisers to run better events under the BDRA ruleset.

This post forms part of our Education & Safety series, helping to explain how organised competition is supported across the UK.
