Our great crested grebes had an amazing year on the lakes. Several pairs had 2 broods throughout the summer. Always one of the main species we concentrated on during beginner workshops and walks round the lakes. Can’t wait till next year.

A lovely selection of pictures from the kingfisher hide on Friday by John Ford. Even a great spotted woodpecker turned up, plus lots of kingfisher activity.

Since then the activity has increased more, with the chicks growing and in need of more and more fish. One client took 3.5k photos yesterday!

Only 5 seats left in the hide for the remaining time of this brood. Hopefully more later in the year, will keep you posted.

Around the 3rd-7th June, fledglings may be around the hide for a few days.

Remaining availability till August is below:

The chicks have hatched!!! Bang on schedule.

A couple of images from my 10min session in the hide before the clients turn up this morning. I’m sure they are getting much better shots and light.

Thanks for all those who have booked on. Not much space left for bookings, so if you want to photograph them at their peak activity, I would do it now. The next 25 days are going to be busy!

We have an open day this Saturday. I will be there giving a talk on the wildlife at Billingford Fishing Lakes, plus a stall where you can book workshops or one of our specialist hides. Come say hello.

The Kingfishers have been extremely frequent over the last 2 weeks with at least one of the pair outside the hide all day. Both being present a lot of the time. We have had lots of courtship behaviour, fish exchanges, mating and digging.

Won’t be long till the female lays her eggs. Book now for this spring and summer, it’s going to be a busy one! Kingfishers are about 3m away at times. First image is from a full frame camera and a 600mm lens without a crop. Third image is with my phone!

The pair of kingfisher look like they will be nesting near the hide this year. Just out of view but we saw lots of excavating material, mating and fish exchanges today.

Very exciting, they were viewable for about 5 hours out of the 6 hours we spent in there today. Not always photographable but lovely to watch. Think it will get very busy once the eggs have hatch, hopefully in a months time. Will keep you all updated.

Happy Easter!

I had a very small part in the new Sir David Attenborough series 'Secret Garden', starting tonight. My underwater otter footage is featured in this evening’s episode at 6pm.

It’s always surreal seeing your work narrated by Sir David—especially as this is one of three series celebrating his 100th birthday on Wednesday.

What a man.
