What you really want is a wedding photographer who gets you as a couple. Whether you’re traditional & poised or spontaneous & off the cuff, that’s all good. But try to choose a photographer with a similar energy and who rolls the way you do.

Me?

I’ll be the one waving at you excitedly from the other side of the dance floor, with a fish eye lens in my hand, for just one more shot! And it’s gonna be the two of you lying on a chequered floor. Head to head.

I’ve always said that the best photography training you can get, and the best way to improve as a photographer, whatever genre you shoot, is to help out at weddings. Or to actually shoot weddings. Yes assist at first. Then eventually second shoot. But ultimately once you start to book and shoot your own weddings, you’ll very quickly learn exactly what it takes to

✅ produce stunning images, against the clock
✅ in every changing light
✅ whilst juggling a myriad of personalities
✅ and staying cool. For 10-12 hours.
✅ with no second chances

It’s the photographer equivalent of ‘walk the tight rope with no safety net’. You simply have to succeed. Because your clients happiness and your reputation depends on it.

Kudos and much respect to photographers who have had a successful chapter shooting weddings 📸

One thing I’ve learned in my 25 years as a professional photographer and shooting 1000+ weddings, is that no wedding supplier gets remembered (and recommended by the B&G) for being efficient and good at their job. Being efficient and good at your job is a given. As it should be. Thats what you’re paid for.

You get remembered for being empathetic.

You are remembered & recommended for being able to recognise it’s the bride and groom’s EXPERIENCE of their own wedding day that matters above everything else. The wedding is not about the venue, or the chef, or the florist, or the piper, or the minister or celebrant, or the wedding planner. Or the photographer.

To know when to pause, step back and simply allow the bride and groom (and their families) to just be. To take the time they need when they choose, to enjoy, to savour, to laugh or cry or hold. And then knowing when to quietly and gently step forward again with a kind word.

Too often I’ve seen the wedding party be rushed from pillar to post from every wedding supplier, including photographers. Empathy is a superpower when it comes to weddings. And that only comes and grows with experience.

With the wedding season about to kick off, here are a couple of reminders -

✅ choose a photographer who’ll photograph you in the way that you’ll love - traditional, formal or informal & relaxed

✅ the star of every wedding photo won’t always be the bride or groom… 📸😊⭐️

Wedding photos are so much more than standing next to family in a groupshot. The best ones often don’t have anyone looking at the camera. The best ones hint at a story. The best ones you can feel. Sure the family groups are a must. But the wedding photos that give you goosebumps will be the ones no one ever saw you took.

That’s my wedding photography formula anyway! 📸

People hum and haw about whether to have the photographer for an hour at the bride’s house the morning of the wedding. For me, it’s a must do 📸

It was lovely speaking to Emily & Calum about their upcoming wedding, and we were talking about the kinds of shots I take at the getting-ready stages. So I brought out one of my favourite show albums (thank you Kirsty & Lars♥️), thinking it’s far better to SHOW and tell 😊📸

This is why July and August are the most popular months for weddings in Scotland. This is the view the bride will have got walking down the aisle at Trump Turnberry looking towards the west. Do you see Ailsa Craig on the horizon? Decent day for it 📸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Once everyone is seated for the wedding breakfast, I do one last discreet walk round the dining room for interesting photo ops, before I go find my own table for a well earned break with some top quality scraan. Needless to say to say that my fellow table guests won’t know what hit them when I put my camera down. Quality scraan ensures quality banter. And it’s been known to happen that my entire table is the first to belt out Elvis songs even before the entree is served.
