Our first review! And we have to say we're very happy with it...

Fi Read | The Cornishman | 6th December 2012
..before heading to The Poly in Falmouth to see On The Wire. An artist-led dance extravaganza featuring dance films, live performances, photography and art, it was an assault on the senses in the nicest possible way.

Supported by Cornwall Film Festival, having an opportunity to view a selection of international dance films was a rare treat, delivering a range of styles and dance aesthetics in quick succession. From breakdance, hiphop and freaky robotics, to interpretive contemporary offerings including Breathe – filmed by Brett Harvey in various Cornish locations, featuring Emily Dobson and Grace Sellwood.

The live part of the programme put the spotlight equally on both dancers and choreographers. The powerfully moving Effete (the female dancer eyes-closed, repeatedly falling) had a terrifyingly brutal vulnerability, while the show-stealer had to be Charlotte Eatock’s deliciously irreverent Revealing Eve. A tease of a strip, executed with precision timing, wit and flair, how many pairs of pants can one woman wear? Or even own?? Upstairs afterwards, a broad range of dance rooted visual art, more films, a lounge room installation, and the smooth jazz vibes of Molly the Moocha completed the experience. An engaging platform for practitioners, and inspiringly toe-tapping for the wannabe dancer in us all – hope there’s a 2013 OTW.
