Over the past two weeks, we've had the privilege of photographing residents and staff across three care homes operated by The Brendoncare Foundation.
Creating meaningful photography in a care home environment is unlike almost any other assignment. It isn't about asking people to smile on cue or looking for the perfect pose. It's about patience, empathy and understanding.
Many residents are living with dementia or other conditions that can make communication, concentration and confidence more challenging. Building trust takes time. Every interaction needs to happen at the resident's pace, with compassion and respect at its heart.
The most rewarding images come from genuine moments—friendships, shared laughter, reassuring hands, quiet conversations and the everyday acts of kindness that define exceptional care. These are the moments that tell the real story.
For me, success isn't measured by the number of photographs taken, but by whether every resident feels valued, comfortable and treated with dignity throughout the process. When that happens, authentic expressions follow naturally, and the images become a true reflection of the warmth and community within each home.
