The Welsh 3000s challenge is to summit all 15 peaks in Wales above 3000ft within 24 hours. The 24-hour time limit starts when you reach the first peak and stops as soon as you reach the last.

From the first peak to the last is around 43km in length and involves 3,100m of elevation. However, when you include the hike up to the first peak and the descent down the last peak, the challenge is over 50km in length and involves nearly 3,800m of elevation gain.

I attempted the challenge from South to North but unfortunately bailed out after the 2nd mountain range.

My total walking distance (including previous days hiking) was 42km in length, 3191m of elevation and hiking for about 20 hours.

The most difficult section of the Welsh 3000s is the knife-edge arête of Crib Goch with hundreds-of-meters drops on both sides.

I would recommend stashing food and supplies at Nant Peris and Ogwen Valley which lightens your backpack.

I attempted the Welsh 3000s but sadly had to bailout. Thankfully I finished 2 out of 3 mountain ranges and that's 8 out of the 15 peaks.

I reached the last mountain range in the dark and just did not expect to see a grade 1 scramble route. It’s not like I was unable to scramble this but descending is a grade 2 scramble. It was too dangerous and turns out the ascent to Pen yr Ole Wen’s summit is very craggy.

Hiking the Carneddau mountain range in darkness is a completely different ball game than hiking Snowdon during the night. It’s the longest section of the Welsh 3000s with an exposed plateau above 3000 ft.

It wasn't just the navigation that was the problem. I was getting really tired as I had a rubbish sleep on Snowdon summit.

When I gave up, it made me realise the number of mistakes I made during the whole journey. I’m glad I attempted the 3rd mountain range so I know what to do next year on the Welsh 3000s.
Fortunately, I managed to phone a taxi to take me to the end of the route where the car was parked.

The National Three Peaks Challenge is to climb the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales in under 24hrs.

I felt a great sense of achievement for completing the challenge in 23 hrs 55 mins!! I’ve attempted this twice before so it’s definitely 3rd time lucky!!

What better way to complete the 3 peaks than by seeing a spectacular sunrise on Snowdon summit!!

The total walking distance is 42km, ascending over 3,000m of elevation and driving for about 750km.

I was enjoying the amazing scenery of Snowdon so much that I fell behind in time!! The walk out of Miners track was longer than I expected so had to run the last 2 miles.

The run really done me in though luckily there's a campsite not far that has early check-ins.

The A82 road has the most amazing scenery so couldn’t resist stopping to admire the views!!

The first 8 pictures are from Glen Etive which is one of the most beautiful places in Scotland!!!

What a day for the Ben Starav 5!!

The scenery of Glen Etive and the surrounding mountains is absolutely astonishing!!

Mist forecast for the morning but turned into a really nice day!!

In terms of altitude, 8,323 ft is actually my highest on a day hike but 3rd highest route on Strava

I’m training for the National Three Peaks Challenge hence the big hike

Just for comparison: -
Fisherfield 6: 7,399 ft
Glenshee 9: 7,287 ft
Ben Lui 4: 6,079 ft
Ben Nevis via CMD: 4,941 ft

I made it easier for myself by camping for 2 nights at Loch Etive.

Hiking for 14 hours just zaps your energy but it was great to relax to a couple beers afterwards.
