Two weeks tonight - opening night at SaltSpace of “These are our Neighbours,” a photography exhibition remembering when the people of Pollokshields stood their ground against both the Police & the UK Home Office - and won.

The opening evening begins with a quiet hour 6-7pm, then continues 7-9 with poetry readings, a performance from the , and the launch of a limited print-run of photo books featuring many previously unpublished photos from Kenmure Street 13th May 2021, raising donations for local community projects too.

Five years on from the events of Kenmure Street, this exhibition features photos taken by Alasdair Watson from within the crowd during the eight hour stand-off, and looks back on the direct action and solidarity with which the community succeeded in freeing two men detained in an immigration dawn raid, setting an example remembered around the world.

Please note the slight change to opening times, and I hope to see you there 🧡

Instagram recommended this song composed by Barry Burns for the movie Everybody to Kenmure Street, and I think it’s one of the most beautiful pieces of music I’ve heard in years.

Incredible turnout at the demo to save 103 Trongate, while the organisations affected are today forced into signing unsustainable new leases in order to buy time for further negotiations.
The loss of this cultural hub would be a real betrayal, one that began with the previous Labour led council transferring the building to City Property just months after using public funds to develop the space and promising tenants affordable 25 year leases (which never made it to paper).
City Property allows the council to keep responsiblity and accountabliity at arms length, while generating revenue in a manner completely at odds with fostering a cultural hub like Trongate 103.

This situation is not happening in a vaccuum, but rather is an inevitable symptom of decades of extractative economics and austerity politics. Rents and other essential costs have been allowed to skyrocket, giving us empty high streets where organisations and small businesses can no longer afford to operate, while public services are cut to the bone. The conditions which led to the Union Street fire are the same ones at play here at Trongate and elsewhere - a race to the bottom.
Whether City Property or GCC can be convinced to shoogle some money around to save Trongate 103 is one question, but the bigger question is how we as a society and nation can use our collective power to wrestle back our streets, our infrastructure, and our cultural ecosystems, from those who would squeeze them to death.
