Nic & Martha’s story began only three years ago, with the swipe of a finger on the dating app ‘Her’...

M. When I came across Nic’s profile, something about her caught my eye. I had to take a chance and swipe right. I don’t remember if it was her gorgeous blue eyes, stunning hair or just that she seemed equal parts down to earth and cool…. but I wanted to know more about her and hoped she swiped right too. Thankfully she did and our first proper conversation happened on Valentine’s Day when Nic told me how it had taken 2 posties to deliver her mail that morning. I assumed this was because she had been delivered so many Valentine’s Day cards. And she confirmed this was of course true.

N. I decided to get myself out there after a lunch with the girls in which a few bottles of wine may have been consumed …. Anyway as always she was there with some top advice and gave me the confidence to try online dating …. Martha was the one I kept coming back to … it was the eyes and confident smile, and she just looked so happy in all her pics ….. unusually for me I waited a few days and for the wine to wear off before swiping right 🙂 longest three minutes of my life before I got any reply

First Impressions?

M. We first met in person at The Citizen. I was initially pretty nervous- (a standard first date thing for me) so I was happy when she arrived first, so when I looked in the window I saw Nic’s gorgeous hair.

N. I clocked her walking past the window and tried to act all cool and causal when she came in to sit down

M. Seeing her in person surpassed what I’d hoped she would be like. She had an easy confidence and conversation and eyes I couldn’t tear myself away from. I was so bowled over by her beauty and charm that I fell off my chair- true story! The waitress had come over and said our table for our meal was ready and I backed out of the booth falling straight onto the ground

N. …. Falling off her seat (not even one drink in) was the perfect icebreaker, again her eyes were what I first noticed. Needless to say the rest of the night went really well plenty of cocktails and banter …. With no need for her friend Hannah’s emergency phone call to get her out if it was going poorly.

So far so good?

N. We kept talking and never stopped, initially I was a bit worried about being able to maintain a fairly long distance relationship but there was that ‘click’ and it was reaffirmed every time we met up.

M. I’d been planning a move to Edinburgh before I started chatting to Nic and actually I think that’s what kept the spark going. It would’ve been too long distance otherwise as I was up in Aberdeen. In the meantime we tried to fit a few dates in, each making the effort to travel. The more dates we had, the tougher it was to leave her at the end.
That was definitely a sign it was something special. After about 8 months or so, she introduced me to Jude and Zoe.

N. When she finally moved to Edinburgh it was easier for sure. Meeting her girls it all happened very naturally, and she got the stamp of approval fairly quickly …. For me that was the best, to see the girls accept her and her accept them felt like the final piece of the jigsaw.

M. I was apprehensive but they were so lovely and thankfully warmed to me quickly- definitely nothing to do with my stellar baking skills. From there we continued to build our relationship, between the two cities and once we both felt the time was right and had spoken to the girls to make sure they were happy, I moved in! Since then we’ve had countless adventures together including a trip to Los Angeles, getting our puppy Tess, exam and university preparations, wedding planning and of course the biggest test of all relationships- building IKEA furniture together. I love Nic, we’re a team and a family now and always will be.

Their day was SO much fun and their dads rather enjoyed a wee shot with the Quaich afterwards!

The first time I met Dariga & Ewen in person was on their wedding day! We had to do all of the ceremony planning on video calls across three countries. Dariga is from Kazakhstan, Ewen is Scottish but they now live in Texas so so this was a truly international wedding! This is their story..

D. I graduated from university in June of 2019 and a few of my university friends and I were hired and sent to onboarding training in Melun, France. On the first day of training, we all walked into the classroom and realised we had been assigned seating... disappointing because we’d imagined sitting together, chatting and getting through the training as a group. Little did I know that seating chart was about to change my life forever.

E. I had originally been scheduled to attend an earlier training in Abu Dhabi, but it was delayed and then, at the last minute, changed to Paris.

D. As I walked up row after row, I finally saw my name next to someone named Ewen (which I obviously read as ‘Even’) I just walked past without giving it much thought, but eventually, I said hi, introduced myself, and finally got a good look at his face.

E. From that moment on, we became inseparable for the rest of the training, which lasted roughly two months.

First impressions?

D. I thought “well, he is cute”, but I was 21 years old and had no interest in starting any relationship during the 2 months of training. Well, that quickly changed.

E. It was my first time meeting someone from Kazakhstan. Of course, I found her very attractive and was a little nervous to talk to her, but as I got to know her, I fell in love with her personality.

D. Within first few days, we got to know each other better, and I realised whatever the instructor is saying will never be as interesting as the conversation we were having. We even got in trouble a few times cause we couldn’t stop giggling.

E. She was always the centre of attention — in a good way — so bubbly and one of those people everyone was naturally drawn to. I found myself getting a bit jealous whenever other people had her attention over me.

D. It didn’t take long for my friends to start teasing me about him liking me. I was adamant that he didn’t.

E. I remember finding her hilarious, and she had this obsession with the Korean boy band BTS, particularly one member, Jungkook, who happened to share the exact same birthday as me.

D. One thing we enjoyed was teaching each other words and phrases from our native languages. One of the words I taught him was “zhanym,” which means “my soul.” In Kazakhstan, it’s very common to call your partner or loved one zhanym and he started calling me this constantly... I blushed every single time.
One day, I finally said, “I told you that is what couples call each other. You need to stop.” He just looked at me, smiled, and said, “I know.” We were both so immature that it took us another week to finally say how we felt. It was the first relationship for both of us. We had no idea what we were doing, how relationships worked or even how we were supposed to act. But somehow we fell in love very quickly.

E. The whole training was a bit of a whirlwind and definitely one of the most memorable times of my life. By the time we left, we were very much in a relationship.

D. As the course was coming to an end, I became increasingly anxious. What are we doing next? Are we breaking up? He, on the other hand, was calm as a tree. Then the final day came. I cried on his shoulder the whole night and left the next morning. He called when I was at the airport, and I think the reality finally hit him. I was gone. We had no idea when we’d see each other again or what will happen to us, but we agreed to try.

E. I remember having this empty feeling in my chest, like a part of me was missing. The rest of the training just wasn’t the same and I wanted to leave as soon as possible. I moved to Qatar, a huge change for me, and I started working offshore on oil rigs with terrible internet (getting the excuses in early).

D. For four months, we were in a long-distance relationship. We tried calling each other whenever we could, but we lived in two different countries, worked different schedules, and were just at the beginning our careers. Neither of us really knew how to communicate through the distance and what sacrifices needed to be made.

E. It was difficult; there were times when we couldn’t talk, and there was no clear date for when we would ever see each other again.

D. Eventually, we broke up. Over the next few months, Ewen tried to reconnect. But with Covid happening, I did not want to start a relationship again only to never see him.

E. We did that typical thing of saying, “We’ll stay in contact and maybe it’ll work out” and “right person, wrong timing.”

D. We cut all contact after that. Years passed.

E. I muted her social media so I wouldn’t constantly be reminded of her, and slowly we became strangers. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think about her a lot though, and whenever I did, I always felt awful.

D. I never felt what I’d felt with Ewen. He always quietly lived in the back of my mind. I thought about him almost every night before falling asleep. I often imagine us bumping into each other somehow, somewhere in the world and never having to say goodbye again.
I knew if I ever got married, it would be to Ewen.

E. The World Cup came to Qatar and I somehow managed to get tickets to the opening ceremony. I’m obsessed with football, so this was massive for me. Anyway, I went and, unbelievably, Jungkook from BTS was performing. I genuinely couldn’t believe it — it felt like our two worlds were colliding again.

D. Then, by what felt like pure universe magic, I received a message from Ewen. I was so scared to open it. I paced around for hours, coming up with millions of scenarios in my head of what it could be. Finally, I opened that message. It was simple. He’d seen Jungkook perform and thought about me. I smiled. I replied.

E. I sent a video to her, before turning my phone off to enjoy the game, but in the back of my mind I was wondering whether she would even reply. After the game, I turned my phone back on and found that she had indeed replied.

D. We started texting. The next day we talked for hours as if those three years had never happened. It was still Dariga and Ewen. Less than ten days later, I was on a plane. Seeing him at the airport, holding his hand in the taxi, and sharing that first kiss after three years apart felt magical. In that moment, I knew what had been missing from my life.

E. Things moved pretty quickly after that and, before we knew it, we were engaged, officially married in Gibraltar in October 2024, and then moved into our first home together in Texas — almost seven years after first meeting.

This ceremony was the last of three, they legally married in Gibraltar, had a ceremony in Kazakhstan and finally the third here in Scotland. The only problem was none of her family speak any English so we had the entire script translated into Russian so they could read along and understand drinking from the Quaich, and hand fasting! What a day, congratulations Mr & Mrs Beaton! ❤️

Nola & Matthew’s story began about 20years ago, (not that either of them were very clear on that) and as to where it all began?, they weren’t entirely sure of that either...

M. The short(ish) version is that we first met when we were in our early 20s being in the same social circles. First time would’ve either been at The Cathouse, or a flat party in Kelvingrove Street. We had a few evenings of drunken kisses and cringey follow up Facebook messages the next day, but eventually we both went our separate ways. Nola went to Australia, and I was working in Poland, Shetland, Tunisia and Aberdeen.

N. We properly started chatting when he commented on a photo I posted in 2022, in these chats he said he wanted to do more yoga and so he booked one of my classes.

M. The aim was to improve my flexibility, and of course to try and get closer to her. I hung around nervously at the end and offered her a lift home. It was winter and I knew she lived a good distance away, thankfully she accepted!

First impressions?

N. His yoga skills were actually pretty impressive, but I couldn’t believe how good looking he had become over the years. I definitely started wearing more make up and the tightest leggings to teach those Friday night classes.

M. VERY first impressions I remember thinking she was hot and just way too cool for me! After reconnecting and getting to know her better, first impressions again were how hot she was, but also she had such a calming presence and a voice I just fell in love with straight away.

N. We recently went through our Facebook messages to each other for the past 20 years and realised I stood Mash up a couple times while he waited on me outside nightclubs in Glasgow. If only id known…….

M. We got on really well, things hit off immediately, so I asked if she wanted to go on a date. Nola had plans to go to Barcelona with her sister, so we booked it for a few weeks’ time.
Then she came back early and messaged me on Facebook to say her phone had been stolen, so I asked if she wanted to go out the following night as I couldn’t wait, and she said yes. We spent the night chatting in ‘Curious Liquids’, I walked her home, and we had a wee kiss. I then wanted to spend all my free time with her after that, and we pretty much did! Every time I was home we’d hang out with each other 90% of the time and I became a regular at her yoga class making sure I was always right up the front next to her mat!

N. We went a bunch of holidays, currently renovating our first place together, got our fur baby Vinny and planned some more adventures.

Their day was like no other, flower boys starred it all off and it’s certainly a first for me to have a tattoo studio set up for guests to get inked after the ceremony… and in case you were wondering, I politely declined! 😂

Let me take you all back to a newly post-Covid world, where singletons had little or no chance of meeting anyone, other than online. So Jane & Stephen’s story began with the swipe of a finger...on dating app Hinge

J. We were chatting online for quite a while but there was no sign of Stephen asking me out on an actual date, so I had to give him a nudge.

S. Even through a screen, Jane immediately caught my attention with her personality, her sense of fun, and her photos. After chatting for a while, we arranged to meet for a coffee after work at Browns on 9th December 2021.

J. I arrived early but he was about 10 minutes late. He let me know he was on his way so I didn’t panic I was going to be stood up but knowing him much better now, he absolutely hates to be late for anything so I know how stressed he must have been about it!

First impressions?

S. I'd barely stepped through the door when I spotted her sitting near the bar. She looked absolutely stunning, immaculately dressed and, to my great relief, exactly as her profile pictures had promised. Going over to say hello, I found myself immediately drawn to her gorgeous blue eyes and her really cute smile. And then she spoke. An Irish accent, completely unexpected, and a very welcome surprise.

J. I thought he looked really handsome! I really wasn’t sure what to expect as his pictures on Hinge clearly ranged some years and he looked like a different person in each of them. I was very pleasantly surprised when he arrived. I don’t remember there being any awkward moments and he just seemed so lovely!

S. From the moment we sat down together, the conversation flowed naturally and easily. We talked for hours, right up until the staff were closing up around us, and yet somehow it felt as though the evening had gone by in an instant

J. The date went really well, I thought he seemed like a lovely, genuine and very good looking guy and I was really hoping he would want to see me again! He didn’t keep me guessing and texted the next day to say he had a great time too

S. After we finally said our goodbyes, I couldn't stop thinking about her. I knew straight away that I needed to do everything in my power to make sure there was a second date. A week or so later, we went out for dinner and then headed back to Browns for a few drinks afterwards. Again, it flew past in an instant and couldn’t wait to see her again.

J. Shortly after that I went home to Ireland for Christmas and while I was there, I got Covid and spent 10 days locked in my sister’s spare bedroom isolating. I was worried things would fizzle out with me being gone for so long, but Stephen texted or called me very day and came up with games to keep me entertained while I was ill. That was when I really knew that I’d found a good one and I couldn’t wait to get back to Scotland to see him!

S. I remember joking to myself that this was a very elaborate excuse not to see me again!. We spent those days on long phone calls, with me trying my best to cheer her up and come up with ways to pass the time together. At one point we were even playing Eye Spy using the only window she had access to in the room.

J. Once I got back from Ireland we were pretty much inseparable. We spent lots of time together. I’m not exactly sure when he moved into my flat. He did a bit of a ‘stealth move-in’ and just started bringing over more stuff and going home less!

S. Every date felt easy and natural as we got to know each other more and more. Over time, staying over for one night slowly turned into two nights, then bringing enough clothes to last a few days. Eventually I would say that I needed to head home to get clean clothes, only for her to tell me to just wash them there and stay longer. Somewhere along the way, that gradually turned into me moving in completely.

J. Unluckily for him I’d bought my flat the year before and it was a total reno project. I had discovered a new passion for DIY and was building up an impressive tool collection and Stephen was dragged into the thick of it as my (semi-reluctant) assistant. Over the next two years we renovated every inch of that flat. There were moments when I thought he might leave me including when I insisted that wallpapering the ceiling in the hall would look fab (turns out it’s much trickier than I imagined) and when I convinced him that fitting a new kitchen really couldn’t be that hard and we could probably just do it ourselves…Turns out that couples who reno together stay together!

S. We completed the work together and it looked absolutely fantastic. It had only been finished for three or four months before we both realised that what we really wanted next was a home together. So the flat went up for sale and the house hunt began.

J. After a couple of years we bought our first home together in Cambuslang! Much to my disappointment at the time, Stephen was not up for another renovation project (I can’t imagine why??) but it turns out he was right and we’ve had the time to discover some new hobbies instead including gardening (he takes his lawn care VERY seriously), making sourdough every week and starting a fitness/weightlifting journey together. I haven’t completely hung up my DIY gloves though and have designs on wallpapering another ceiling after the wedding…lucky him!

They chose The Director’s Room at the Merchant’s House in George Sq for their ceremony, a small intimate yet grand room right in the heart of Glasgow and a first for me. Jane just casually walked round from her hotel and afterwards, together with their guests, we all walked to the city chambers for the perfect photos. Congratulations Mr & Mrs Gallacher ❤️

Bev & Louise’s story began back in 2016, in probably the more unlikely of settings, a psychiatric hospital …

L. I was a newly qualified mental health nurse in a forensic psychiatric ward and she already worked there.

B. We were on opposite sides of the shift so didn't really work together initially, but in January 2017, a series of unfortunate and bizarre work events (even by psychiatric ward standards) brought us together.

L. It was an emergency situation, where we broke up a fight and found out afterwards that one of the patients had a weapon!

B. It turned out to be fortunate for us, as it meant we began to work more shifts together and started to become friendly, socialising out with work.

L. The following week there was another scary, emergency at work that I was involved in and Bev wasn’t, but she was the one I wanted to speak to about it afterwards, so I messaged her after I got home. From then on, we have been pretty much inseparable but initially as friends.

First impressions?

B. I thought she was cute and I kidded on I was into the TV show Love Island to have some initial chat in common.....(I was never into Love Island) Louise was definitely my type, long dark hair, great sense of humour, cute smile and she did this amazing impression of a butterfly that was hilarious, however there was the small issue of not knowing if she was gay.

L. I remember thinking that she was someone who absolutely had their life together and knew what they were doing, whereas I absolutely did not! She made me laugh and put me at ease at work.

B. There was definitely some low key flirting though during trips to the movies and work team building days, in particular our day out climbing Goatfell.

L. I remember being excited to be with Bev all day and we had such a good time, it felt like something more than friends at this point, but nothing had been said out loud.

B. A few of us then decided to do the charity colour run, essentially running 5 kilometres getting paint thrown at you for a good cause and then get dinner and drinks after it. Everybody dispersed apart from Louise and I and we ended up in the solid rock café chatting and laughing. That’s when we had our first kiss still in our gym gear and covered in paint.

L. Before we knew it, everyone else had gone and it was just me and her; the alcohol was likely all it took to tip the friendship over into something more!

B. The next day I wrote her a long text about what a great time I'd had and how much I liked her; I sent it and…… heard nothing back......for a few days. She most definitely left me hanging however after she'd had time to think she knew it was the right move. Things moved pretty fast after that I’m sure we said we loved one another within a few weeks.

L. Initially we kept it a secret from pretty much everyone because we worked together and knew one of us would have to move to a different ward if it became common knowledge. I don’t think either of us were the best at hiding it though… we both individually told people and pretended we hadn’t!

B. Then one nightshift, a colleague, whom Louise sometimes drove home, asked for a lift but Louise was coming to mine, so she said she couldn’t as she had a doctor’s appointment…….on a Sunday. I don’t know how we managed to keep it under wraps for so long with that kind of chat.

L. We eventually told everyone in September 2017, roughly a year after we met, and I moved in with her. She had a cat called Misty, I think early in the relationship I’d pretended to like cats because that’s what you do when you’re trying to impress someone, but I was in fact not a great fan of cats at all! I loved that time, if we weren’t working we’d spend time going to gigs, on city breaks, trips to the cinema or watching horror films at home. I remember we’d discussed having kids pretty early on in the relationship, it was something that I wanted and luckily Bev felt the same.

B. Our relationship is easy and fun. Our lives are full with work and children and children’s multitude of activities that we facilitate but we always find the humour. Even when we are having a grump at one another we usually turn it round pretty quickly.

L. We are similar in ways that count but different in ways that complement each other. We share the same morals and the same views about the world and how people should be treated. We make each other laugh and have a similar sense of humour. We have fun together and genuinely enjoy being in each other’s company

Their day was just perfect, the sun shone, and their faces just said it all, pure joy. Congratulations Mrs & Mrs Blackhall-Stirling ❤️
