Whilst observing at the newly opened Danby Darksky Station in the North York Moors National Park I'd set this little scene up. Orion between the telescope and the observatory roof. I'd been taking multiple 25 second exposures and had seen a number of but failed to capture any. Here however, the was passing over and entering the shadow of earth and looks pretty effective!

Sunday night was finally clear so I got my camera out to take some stary photos. I noticed a splodge to the left of Orion in the cancellation of Monoceros. I decided to get a better view and pointed the telescope at it.

The result was the amazing Rosette Nebula, located on the nose of the Unicorn. Almost looking like a skull, infact sometimes refered to as the Skull nebula.

The dark 'cracks' in the brow of the opening are dense pillars of dust and cold molecular hydrogen gas that silhouette against the bright, ionized emission gas of the nebula. These features are often described as "elephant trunks" or dark veins that are being actively carved, compressed, and eroded by the intense radiation and stellar winds from the central star cluster, NGC 2244.

Keep stargazing...

Loving the over Danby Lodge in the reserve and playing in the brand-new with the amazing C11-edge. I can't wait for some clear nights and to get some groups in here!

Back in October I led a nocturnal walk with bat detectors and UV lights. We had bats flying around our heads going berserk, bioflourecent fungi and insects. To top it all off, clear skies to observe Saturn, comet Lemmon, Galaxies amd nebula! A free event funded by our REConnect project. We even had soup and a hot drink. Marvellous...

OK, so this is just rushed together. I wanted to show my photo of the and and its location in the constellation. So I stitched Stellarium on to the end. Its pretty rubbish but hopefully I'll get better! Excuse the rubbish music 🎶

The Andromeda galaxy, 2 million lightyears away. Filled with a trillion stars outside of our own galaxy. You can also see two dwarf galaxy's either side.

This was about 5 hours of data from a couple of weeks ago in my back garden.

I will never not be amazed by the wonders of the universe 🌌

I captured the photons from the Wizard Nebula. 8,500 lightyears away. It's apparently named after its look of a cloaked figure with its arms outstretched (or at least reaching forward). The more I look at it, the more I see it - side on face and hat sort of leaning down at the top, arms below...

A nice close-up of the Ivy bee. Much more dainty than a honey bee but still perfectly formed. This is a huge crop, so I was surprised at how clear it remained. Imagine this as a giant print on your wall! I'd be 'buzzing' with that...

Ivy bees always look so perfect. Like smart diddy honey bees. This time of year, they can be seen around ivy flowers, although this lovely girl was on my giant Yarrow 😳
