Wow, what a way to celebrate Refugee Week. Despite the attempts of the council leader to shut this down, it was a triumph.

The Minster displayed true Christian values, and Emma Bamber, Director of Cafe Laziz, created a day full of joy, hospitality and community.

It was wonderful to see our Haydock candidate Amber Johnson and her family, along with so many Green Party colleagues and friends. 💚

20,000 children fed. Profit made. Service axed. 🤷‍♂️

This is what Reform calls “common sense”. 😬

Leicestershire County Council is shutting down its school meals service, even though it serves around 20,000 children in 117 schools and made a profit last year.

Not a huge profit, admittedly. But a profit all the same.

Reform say they were “waiting for the losses to start”.
Funny, because we thought councils were supposed to deliver services competently, not just kill good ones in anticipation of them going wrong in future… 🤷🏻‍♂️

And here’s the thing…

School dinners shouldn’t just be judged by whether they make money.

They’re about making sure children get a decent meal during the school day. They’re about helping children concentrate in class. They’re about supporting families who are already struggling with the cost of living.

Yet Reform’s answer is to hand it over to the market because someone else might be able to do it cheaper.

Cheaper isn’t always better.

Anyone who has ever fed a family knows that.

Once again we’re seeing the same pattern. Public services are treated as a business first and a public good second.

Children aren’t customers.
School dinners aren’t just numbers on a spreadsheet.

And “common sense” shouldn’t mean putting ideology ahead of what works.

You think they’re your friends.
They’re not.

Our FINAL Simple Act part of the countdown (with Refugee Week only 7 days away!!) is Move Together 💃

Playing together – whether through games, dance or team sports – creates joy, builds trust and is a powerful way to welcome and connect new neighbours.

When we move together, we learn how to collaborate, find strength in unity and make space for everyone. Practising mutual cooperation and mutual support builds strong communities and fosters belonging through action.

Ways to act simply:

1.) Organise a sports game in your local park, community centre or club
2.) Take it a step further by partnering with local refugee organisations to host a sports day, match or tournament
3.) Join a new class- dance, roller skating, football or anything that gets you moving with others

Simple Acts are everyday actions we can all do to stand with refugees and make new connections in our communities.

'Move Together' is one of nine Simple Acts you can do for Refugee Week (15-21 June).

I had a Reform leaflet through the door today. The usual standard national blurb. How can a local councillor ‘end lawlessness’. Do they think it’s like the Wild West out there on the streets of our village? Is there a Viking invasion? You’ve got to laugh at ‘St Helens Council is broken’. Yes it is because it is now in the hands of Reform.

Vote Amber Johnson for Haydock on 25th June. We need an intelligent, experienced woman on our council to stand up for what is right. Make Haydock Green again ✅💚
