At this time of year, after far too much turkey, Christmas pud and mulled wine (or in my case, cider! 🍎), it feels right to pause, reflect, and set new goals for the year ahead.

For 2026, I’ve decided to take on two long-term challenges:
πŸ”οΈ the Peak District 88 Trig Point Challenge.
πŸ₯Ύ the Lake District 214 Wainwright Challenge.

I’m under no illusion that I’ll finish either in a year β€” that would be madness β€” but with a bit of persistence, hopefully I’ll tick them all off before I’m old, grey and senile.

So, let’s begin…

βœ… 1/88 – Higher Shelf Stones
πŸ“ Bleaklow Moor, Peak District

A circular route from a lay-by on Snake Pass, walked anti-clockwise. Footpaths were mostly in good condition with just a couple of boggy patches underfoot. The weather was brutal β€” bitterly cold and blowing a gale, especially near the summit.

I made a short detour from the trig to visit the B-29 crash site β€” haunting, humbling, and absolutely worth a visit. The descent had stunning landscape views and a riverside path led me back to the car. Legs were well and truly aching by the end.

A tough but brilliant way to kick things off!

It's been a while since I last took my camera out, but I did on Boxing Day to head up to the most haunting place in the Peak District - the B-29 "Over Exposed" crash site.

On 3rd November 1948, a U.S. Air Force B-29 Superfortress named Over Exposed crashed here during a low-level training flight, tragically killing all 13 crew members. The wreckage still lies scattered across Bleaklow moor, acting as a poignant memorial and a stark reminder of the area’s history.
