Firstly a massive big thank you to the hundreds of you that commented on my Castro Marim Kingfisher yesterday. Way too many for me to thank each personally but most appreciated.
I hope you equally enjoy and share a few more captures of this stunning bird that has always made people smile all over the world.
What you don't know is that it took me nearly 3 hours sheltering in my loyal Suzuki Jimny in the blistering sunshine with the door open and finger on the shutter....just waiting.
Definitely my best Algarve Kingfishers, matched only by the last photo taken 3 years ago now at Forte Do Rato Tavira. The later was just a 5 second opportunity. Right place right time.
So as I said last week... Wildlife photography is a combination of planning and often just luck. Enjoy.

With just two days before we return to the UK I decided to go Kingfisher hunting at what we call John's spot near Castro Marim.
I didn't know until I got on the computer that I'd captured this little gem. I have no idea where the bubbles in the background came from but they certainly enhanced this special shot.

Shrikes are incredible birds and seeing any one of this very unique species is special. Catching this one up close was one of those moments. Iberian Grey Shrike Monchique.

Bird identification skills are developed over many years. I thought I would post these two Algarve captures to show off the glorious and very similar Ringed Plover and Little Ringed Plover.

Late last year I was told that our local Cattle Egrets roost every evening on the sculpture on what we call The Aldi Roundabout in Tavira. I took some photos then, but the sunset was in the wrong position. I promised myself that I would return in the summer and here they are. Please follow or share so others can enjoy this special Tavira experience.

One of my objectives this week was to try and get a decent in flight shot of Collard Pratincole's.
I hope you enjoy these captures of this most stunning and unusual bird. Unfortunately unable divulge the location except its in the Algarve.
Some information for you as well
"The collared pratincole is a bird of open country, and is often seen near water in the evening, hawking for insects. It is found in the warmer parts of Europe, southwest Asia and Africa. It is migratory, wintering in tropical Africa"

I mentioned this week that wildlife photography often requires some planning and luck. Well today was absolutely incredible luck.
My car battery went flat and I decided to go on a last minute bike ride up the Gilao River from Tavira. I stopped on my regular small bridge trying yet again to capture Golden Oriole and Nightingales. I heard both but not one sighting. Then out of the blue this unexpected gem landed in a tree. I knew instantly that it was a Hawfinch and just about got three shots before car scared it off.
My first ever Portugal Hawfinch. Didn't think that would happen today.

Our Grey Heron is a stunningly beautiful bird. Even more so in the dawn sunshine on the road to Fort Do Rato Tavira this morning.
Yet again the background absolutely made this photo. I hope you agree.

Mostly wildlife photography involves a lot of planning and often luck. However when nesting and feeding young the process becomes a little easier. A small selection of parents collecting bugs for the next generation. All taken within a few miles of my house in Hertfordshire.
