BREAKING: Two Minnesota women have been charged in a massive Medicaid fraud scheme that allegedly bilked the program out of more than $21 million.
Shamso Ahmed Hassan and associates allegedly ran Smart Therapy Center and Star Autism Center, submitting tens of millions in false claims for autism services that were either never provided or medically unnecessary. Federal prosecutors say they paid kickbacks to parents, inflated diagnoses, and funneled the proceeds into real estate and overseas transfers.
This is part of a larger federal takedown charging 15 defendants for over $90 million in alleged fraud across Minnesota's Medicaid programs. Hassan has pleaded not guilty. Cases are ongoing.
Authorities are calling it one of the largest autism-service fraud operations in state history.
