✨ What an unforgettable year 2025 has been! ✨

I’ve found myself scrolling back through this year’s images and my blog posts (https://www.edytaricephotography.com/blog), remembering the early starts, frozen fingers, sudden changes in weather and those rare moments when everything just came together. 2025 was a definitely year shaped by patience, persistence and a deep passion for the landscape photography, especially of our beautiful Lake District, which once again gave endlessly, challenged constantly, and surprised me every time ❀

Somewhere between misty mornings, long walks and waiting for the light, something really special happened. This year, my photographs were published over twenty times, and I was incredibly grateful to win in several major competitions and awards, one of which was winning a Landscape Photographer of the Year title at the London Camera Exchange in March ✨✨✨

Many of the awards recognised images created right here among the fells and lakes. Each mention, shortlist or win felt like a quiet nod that the hours spent chasing those beautiful, fleeting moments were worth it.

And speaking of celebrations…
It feels like the perfect moment to share a little one of our own.

πŸ‘€ Looking ahead to January
Another competition will be launching soon, and this time there will be a chance to win signed prints, something a little extra special to start the year !

Finally, and most importantly - thank you ❀❀❀❀
Thank you for following along, supporting my work, reading the blog, sharing images and being part of this journey throughout 2025. None of it happens in isolation, and your encouragement never goes unnoticed.

✨ Wishing you all a very Happy New Year , may 2026 bring beautiful light, meaningful moments and plenty of reasons to get outside ✨

Thank you for being here. πŸ’™

Two very different mornings in Cumbria over the past few days!

Derwent Water on 21 November was calm, cold and covered in a proper winter feel with snow on the fells and clear reflections across the lake.

This morning at Loweswater was completely different. Warmer light, a bright sunrise and a Belted Galloway deciding to step into the frame. The snow is still hanging on the higher ground but the atmosphere could not have been more of a contrast.

That is the Lakes all over. Never the same twice.

The northern lights made their return to Cumbria on 20 November. Although this display wasn’t quite as dramatic as the storm on the 12th, the clear skies and absence of moonlight gave the coast a real chance to shine. I spent the night moving between Workington port, Maryport, and my favourite lookout near Bassenthwaite, and despite the aurora being more subtle this time, the conditions were perfect for some rewarding shots.

It was absolutely bitter out there, with temperatures sinking to –6Β°C, the kind of cold that bites straight through gloves. After that came a short spell of crisp weather, leaving the local fells dusted with fresh snow. The following morning broke calm and icy, and Derwent Water looked breathtaking against the wintery backdrop a still, silent scene with the mountains cloaked in white.

If anyone fancies learning a bit more about spotting and photographing the aurora, there’s a free guide available to download in the blog section of my website.

I’m opening the vault today!
For the first time, I’m sharing a blend of my favourite Lake District captures alongside some unforgettable scenes from the East Coast ...moments under the northern lights that have never made it to social media… until now.
With another big display heading for Cumbria, it feels like the perfect moment to let these hidden gems see the light of day.
Over the coming days I’ll be talking through how I approach photographing the aurora, the real techniques I rely on, not the usual vague hints you hear floating about. A few of these pointers are things most landscape photographers would probably keep to themselves… but I’m going to share them here!
If you want to be ready for the next show and capture it at its best ...follow and like this page so you don’t miss the updates.

This morning started in the most unexpected way. Around 2am, my phone lit up with a flurry of alerts... strong aurora activity! At first, I hesitated. It looked far too cloudy to catch anything worthwhile. But when I saw that the next big burst was expected within the hour, the decision was made – I grabbed my gear and headed straight for Bassenthwaite.
What greeted me there was nothing short of jaw dropping. The sky burned with the deepest, most vivid red I’ve ever seen in all my years photographing the Northern Lights in Cumbria .. it truly felt like the heavens had opened! Despite the drizzle and low cloud, the horizon came alive with dancing pillars that grew stronger minute by minute.

The lake shore was still partially flooded, but thankfully I was well prepared (always trust your footwear!). I took several shots from different angles, but β€˜Cosmic Trees’ has to be my favourite ... captured just as I was heading back to the car. The cloud, rather than spoiling the scene, added a mysterious depth to the composition.

Looking back, perhaps the coast might have offered clearer skies, but honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing. It was one of those magical nights that remind you why you chase these moments in the first place ... even if it means surviving the day at work on little to no sleep!

Hope you enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed capturing them and I’ve also included one from the same spot taken last year under clearer skies for comparison!

The weather has been relentless once again.. heavy rain and fierce winds battering the region. At one point, my weather app was flashing flood alerts, and venturing outside felt near impossible. Yet, in those rare and unexpected pauses between storms, the light worked its quiet magic. Grasmere graced us with beautiful autumn fog, and Nichol End Marina in Keswick offered scenes of pure tranquillity. Derwent Water draped in pink clouds and gentle rolling mist.

I keep returning to those moments in my mind, and wanted to share just one more from 30th October, a scene that still feels wonderfully peaceful....
