For my holiday sketches I took my inktense blocks with me. I haven’t used them for some time. Due to car issues, I found myself with time in the cottage so had a good play. Here’s what I did. The dark landscape (Sandhead Beach)and the Fuchsia were completed using the blocks like pastels, putting the pigment on the paper and then adding the water. The light landscapes (Drummore Shore & Port Logan ) and the Butterfly were completed using the blocks like pan watercolours, wetting the brush, dipping in and painting. I like the intensity of the inktense. Used like watercolours adding more water gives lighter tones. Unlike watercolour once the paint had dried it can’t be moved so re-wetting to change things isn’t an option. I preferred using them with the paint brush dipping but consider that for backgrounds the pastel method gets the paint down quickly. Also found that palettes and brushes get stained.

This Hummingbird Hawk Moth has been visiting me for some time. Whilst gardening today he/she almost touched my hand. I washed my hands, got the phone and attempted some shots. The moth never lands on the flowers and flits about the plant, so there were a lot of blurred or just lavender shots. However with persistence I got a few shots of this fabulous creature.
