🪶 A flash of orange in the African bush…

One of the most striking birds I encountered in Tuli Wilderness, Botswana; the unmistakable African Hoopoe.

With its warm cinnamon-orange plumage, dramatic black and white wings and tail, long curved bill and distinctive erectile crest, the Hoopoe is almost impossible to mistake for anything else. That incredible bill is perfectly adapted for probing the ground for insects, grubs and other invertebrates.

I love how this image captures the Hoopoe’s elegant profile against the soft, golden Tuli background. A reminder that the African bush isn’t just about the big predators; sometimes the smaller characters can steal the show. 📸🇧🇼

THE BROWN HYENA — ONE OF AFRICA’S MOST ELUSIVE PREDATORS

There’s something incredibly special about seeing a brown hyena in the wild. Often overlooked in favour of Africa’s more famous predators, these fascinating animals are actually among the continent’s most elusive carnivores.

With their shaggy, striped coats, powerful jaws and distinctive pointed ears, brown hyenas are perfectly adapted to life in some of southern Africa’s harshest environments. They are predominantly scavengers, but they’re also capable hunters, with an incredibly varied diet.

I was incredibly fortunate to spend time with this beautiful individual in the Tuli Wilderness. Getting a close-up look at those incredible eyes, weathered face and wonderfully untidy coat was a real privilege. The kind of wildlife encounter that stays with you forever for sure..!

The more time I spent photographing Africa’s wildlife, the more I appreciated the species that don’t always get the spotlight. Brown hyenas deserve far more recognition imho.

If you enjoy wildlife, conservation, photography and unforgettable encounters in the African wilderness, follow along for more.

One of the greatest moments of my wildlife photography journey to date. Spotting and photographing this beautiful leopard in the bush, at night, during an amazing week at the brilliant Tuli Wilderness in Botswana. I’m sure you’ll all agree that it is one magnificent cat and a memory that will stay with me forever.

It was a real privilege to be on the vehicle with Mike Phelps and Gareth Clifford | Wildlife Photographer at the time and joined a few minutes later by a d a m j u c k e s Mike Porter and Dave Clarke

Huge thanks to Apex Adventures for providing lifetime moments all week!!

Here’s one of my local Barn Owls photographed during a workshop I was running for the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust at Staveley Nature Reserve recently. Channeling my inner Jake | Wildlife Photographer I’d like to think I did this beautiful bird justice on this occasion.

There’s something about a lion’s gaze that makes you stop and forget everything else. 🦁

No roar. No dramatic moment. Just a quiet, powerful stare from a young lion cub lying low in the grass, completely at home in that world.

For a few seconds, our worlds met. And that cub made sure I knew exactly who was watching whom. ❤️

Wildlife photography is about so much more than capturing an animal. It’s about capturing that fleeting connection; a moment that stays with you long after you’ve left the bush.

Beauty isn’t always measured by stripes or spots. Sometimes it’s found in character. 🐗

The warthog is one of Africa’s most underrated animals. Built for survival rather than glamour, they thrive in some of the harshest environments, relying on intelligence, speed, and resilience to outwit predators every single day.

Every species has a story worth telling, and every encounter in the African bush is a reminder that nature’s greatest treasures come in all shapes and sizes.

Another from the brilliant Barn Owl session om Saturday’s workshop at Staveley Nature Reserve.

I have always said that every single Barn Owl encounter feels as exciting as the first. This one didn’t change my mind on that!
