Spiaggia delle Mortelle at Sunset
Acrylic on Paper
42 x 29.5 cm
I have always been inspired by sunset views yet often feel guilty about using such ‘cliche’ imagery in my work. This piece was a first real attempt to explore this interest in depth and confront the ‘pretty landscape’ stereotype. I painted largely from memory and used a sketch I had made whilst on the beach itself as reference. The result focuses more on the vivid colours and dramatic skyscape that characterise my memory of the scene than an accurate depiction. The water highlights are accompanied by the visual colour effects of looking at bright light, creating a scene that begins to explore the connection between human sight and long-term cognitive image processing.
