Star palm
Working at night reveals a very different world. This tall beach palm in a bay in Mallorca would hardly be noticed during the day as it is surrounded by a myriad sun loungers, palm leaf umbrella shades and the summer cornucopia of the holiday period with tiny humans moving around its base.

It is invisible from the snaking promenade that is only yards away and our eyes miss its presence completely at night.

Sitting for a while looking out to a dark sea
I became aware of a tall looming canopy picking up extraneous light from nearby villas.

The backdrop of stars on a clear night adds to this lone night glamour and by teasing an exposure from my camera this plant shows us its sculptural and textured form in a hundred different greys. To view the effect of the stars in the sky use your finger and thumb to enlarge the image.

At this time of the year the Cornish beaches are a popular holiday destination in fine weather, but only too often our summer can disappoint and this image from the beach at Polzeath shows the less glamorous but more dramatic headland against a coming storm when the beaches are all but empty at low tide, and the dangerous swimming flags are in place. This image was originally shot on film and digitalised afterwards by Genesis Imaging, for Atelier Editions.

Shot in Lewa Game Reserve in Kenya to highlight the drought the region has suffered in recent years. This succulent cactus is 40-50 years old and 30 feet tall. It is extremely hardy, but how long it can survive for without water is unknown. The clouds build up behind it but no water falls.

Sky, sea and shoreline are my ingredients… these colour fields or blocks of colour become abstract landscapes.

Photographed with a slow shutter speed and a shallow ‘depth of field’ the landscape becomes more like a painting. It’s a mathematical equation of time and space that produces infinite visual possibilities. A lasting reflection, composed from the sum of its parts like a memory recalled.

In Grenada, Southern Spain I managed to get an opportunity to photograph a Flamenco troop who would later be performing in a bar nearby. However, I managed to entice them out into a nearby square where there was a strip of sunlight that promised to illuminate her costume in a very dramatic way!

I needed to understand how well she moved and how she could work the costume so that we might have the chance at getting a better shot. It didn’t take long and once I realised what she was capable of we went back to the sunlight where she performed for another minute with her musicians, until I could see the one shot I would need that would make her look like an exotic, scarlet bird of paradise.

DEEP BLUE SEA TRIPTYCH ~ HORIZONS

This ‘Deep Blue Sea’ triptych was photographed in the Caribbean using an underwater housing to keep the camera’s lens half submerged below the waterline, creating two horizons. The ocean’s swell had stirred up the white coral sediment from the beach behind me. The sea’s usual clarity now transformed into a cloudy fog like mixture reducing visibility to only a few feet.

The sea’s surface, caught between these two horizons, acts as a dividing line between sky and sea. Like a mirror held out towards the horizon the varying shades of blue from the sky above are reflected onto the surface of the sea and projected in reverse below the waterline. Only the clouds above escape the deep blue sea.
