“Lost to her at first, I took every sign as confirmation that she was the one. I longed for it so deeply, I even saw her intimacy, unmistakably, in the shape of a cloud.”
- From Elūl

There are so many platitudes online about accountability and healing — but few explain what they really mean. I carried the weight of pain, shame, and blame for years before I realised it wasn’t mine to carry — and that it was holding me back, stranding me in barren ground where nothing good could grow. The book I’ve just made is about that journey.

If you’ve seen my profile, you’ll know I describe myself as a therapeutic photography facilitator and practitioner. What does that mean? I believe all art is therapeutic — for the maker, the witness, and, for want of a better word, the subject. There’s the quotidian process of feeling and making — and there’s the deeper work of excavating from the subconscious into consciousness.

I’d already begun forgiving my former partner years before she approached me, one final time, to apologise for what happened, and what didn’t. I can only imagine that came from her own process — of facing herself, of forgiving herself. The book wasn’t made for her. It was made for me. But I hope it might offer her something too.

Photography has always helped me make sense of life — to look back, to reflect, to reinhabit past experience, and often, to gain deeper insight. It’s enriched my life, broadened my understanding and carried me back to myself.

I don’t explain the images in the book. I write about what was happening inside me. The pictures stand on their own.

I hope that when you hold the book, it holds you. That it gives you space to reflect. And that you find, as I have,
that the truest freedom comes from taking responsibility for what was yours, letting go of what wasn’t, and trusting that forgiveness, like anything worth having, takes time to grow.

I’m thrilled to announce my first workshop of the year, happening on April 16th in Norwich! This city is a photographer’s dream, with its rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant streets. If you’re based in London, it’s an easy trip from Liverpool Street. And if you’ve never been to Norwich, you’re in for a treat!

The day begins with the most sumptuous tea and cake at a cosy spot, followed by a full day of street portraiture and photography exploration. We’ll break for lunch and wrap up in the evening at a pub to review our work and share insights.

📸 Whether you’re new to photography or experienced, this workshop is designed to help you face creative fears and connect through your lens.

Dear friends, colleagues, followers, and supporters,Thank you—truly—for the continued encouragement, messages, and kindness you’ve shown me over the years. Your support means more than I can say and continues to shape and inspire my work.I’ve made the decision to stop sharing content on Instagram. This is partly in response to their increasing shift towards a direction that is not aligned with how I want to engage or share my work. I also have serious concerns about how creators’ images are used, particularly around rights grabs and AI training. To protect the integrity of my photography, I’ve removed all of my work, save these few posts. That said, I’m not disappearing—I’m still here, still cheering you on, still replying to messages, still watching fitness videos and the occasional rat doing something adorable. You’ll continue to find my work, updates, and thoughts on other platforms that offer greater transparency and control - spaces where our connection can stay direct and meaningful without compromising my integrity. Please come find me.Thank you for your company and for walking this path with me.With gratitude,GabrielleYou can explore new and legacy work, book workshops or one-to-one mentoring, apply for educational grants, sign up to my newsletter, and purchase books via:www.gabrielle motola.comwww.patreon.com/gmotophotosbluesky: : .com/in/gmotolahyper-links are in my bio

Luna, fashion journalism.
Sometimes with people I have a chat. sometimes the exchange is so brief.
Regardless of what people ask me about my process it surprises and possibly frustrates them that there is no formula no answer no global single approach or outcome. It’s an exercise in sitting with the discomfort of the unknown and the joy (once you’ve surrendered to it) of improvisation.

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of catching up with to discuss her new personal project and spend some time photographing strangers together. Joining photographic communities has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made—through them, I’ve met so many incredible photographers.

We first hit it off at an event, and I later had the privilege of working closely with her while co-chairing . She’s one of the most accomplished advertising and lifestyle photographers I know, and an absolute gem of a human being.

It was inspiring to walk alongside her, exchanging ideas about our different approaches to photography and observing how each of us photographed strangers. When working to a client brief, your taste informs your work, but the client’s needs come first. Personal projects, however, are different—you have to serve yourself first, and that shift can be challenging.

Kate, though, absolutely nails it.
