AI Photo Editing Failures: What Can Professional Retouchers Learn?

AI photo editing has come a long way — but after putting it through some real-world retouching tests, I was reminded of just how easily things can go wrong.

I recently asked AI to perform a relatively straightforward edit: remove people and objects surrounding a subject and reconstruct the missing areas while placing the subject against a clean, light background.

What happened?

The AI decided to:

Change the person's posture
Alter his facial expression
Make him look directly at the camera
Completely change his hands
Produce feet that looked more like something from a dinosaur documentary!
Add unnecessary texture and detail
Change things that had specifically been requested to remain untouched

The frustrating part wasn't that AI failed.

It was how difficult it was to make it understand what it should leave alone.

But there was also a very different experience. In another project, AI-assisted editing helped produce a fantastic face-swap result — and the client responded:

“You Are a Miracle Worker! OMG, that is amazing!”

That contrast is what makes AI so interesting for professional retouchers.

It's not about AI versus humans.

It's about understanding where AI works, where it doesn't, and where professional judgement is still essential.

Photography, Video and Web Design: Why One Creative Team Can Make Sense

Something I've learned over many years working in photography, video and web design is that these disciplines are far more connected than they might initially appear.

A photograph isn't necessarily just a photograph. It might become the hero image on a website, appear in a brochure, be used on social media or become part of an advertising campaign.

A video isn't simply a video either. It might become the main promotional film on a homepage, a social media campaign or a series of shorter pieces of content.

And the website is where all of this content ultimately comes together.

That's why I believe there can be a real advantage in using one creative team for photography, video and web design.

Instead of three suppliers working independently, the entire project can be planned as one.

The photography can be created specifically for the website. The video can be designed around the marketing objectives. The website can be built around the content rather than trying to make existing material fit afterwards.

One production can potentially create months of marketing content.

When does photo restoration stop being restoration?

This is something I've thought about a lot when restoring old photographs.

A damaged photograph might have scratches running across someone's face, creases through their eyes or mouth, faded areas and missing detail.

The temptation can be to use modern software or AI to make the person look "perfect".

But that's not necessarily restoration.

If someone had wrinkles, those wrinkles may be part of the original photograph.

If they had a distinctive nose, that should remain.

If they had an unusual smile or expression, that is part of who they were.

The objective of professional photo restoration should be to repair the photograph while preserving the person.

AI has made restoration much more accessible, and it can perform some remarkable repairs. But when information has been lost, AI sometimes has to invent what it thinks should be there.

The result can look fantastic while actually becoming less accurate.

A day photographing a luxury yacht... that didn't quite go according to plan.

Being a photographer on the Costa Blanca can sometimes look like a dream job.

Luxury yachts, Mediterranean sunshine, beautiful locations...

But what you don't see in the final photographs is everything that happens behind the scenes.

I was recently booked to photograph a large luxury yacht for a Belgian yacht broker. The original shoot had been postponed because the owner wanted the yacht completely refitted before putting it on the market.

Months later, I received a message asking if I could get to Alicante with just two days' notice.

Fortunately, I was available.

I arrived at 7:30am and photographed the newly refurbished hull and propellers before the yacht was launched. Everything was looking promising.

Then came the delays.

When I finally got on board, there was dust everywhere from the dry dock, protective coverings were still in place and the yacht wasn't ready for the interior photography.

We decided to concentrate on what we could do and headed out to sea.

Unfortunately, the beautiful calm weather we'd had that morning had disappeared. The wind picked up, the sky clouded over and the sea became increasingly choppy.

Then my drone refused to calibrate.

And strangely enough, I was relieved.

Flying a drone over the Mediterranean in those conditions wasn't going to give us the beautiful images we wanted, and there was a very real risk of losing it in the sea.

So we called it a day.

The shoot hasn't failed. It's simply waiting for the right conditions.

That's something I've learned over many years as a professional photographer: sometimes getting the best photograph means knowing when not to take it.

Would you still love your wedding photographs in 20 years?

It's a question worth asking before choosing a wedding photography style.

Photography trends come and go.

A few years ago, pastel matte wedding photography was incredibly fashionable. Today, some of those photographs already look dated.

Your wedding day, however, isn't going to change.

Those photographs may be looked at by your children and grandchildren decades from now.

So should you choose colour?

Black and white?

Or a particular fashionable editing style?

My view is that there isn't one correct answer.

A beautiful wedding collection can contain all three.

Colour can preserve the atmosphere and details of the day, while black and white can be incredibly powerful for emotional photographs.

And here's something many couples don't know:

Professional photographers generally shoot RAW files.

Think of RAW as being similar to a digital negative. It isn't a finished photograph and may initially look flat and dull, but it contains much more information for future processing.

If your photographer is prepared to provide the RAW files, keeping them could mean that you can revisit your photographs in the future.

Imagine choosing black and white today, then wanting colour ten years from now.

The original RAW files could give you that option.

How chasing London buses became my first marketing assignment

There are around 9,000 buses operating across London every day.

I was looking for 30 of them.

The buses were carrying advertisements promoting Almuñécar, a beautiful Mediterranean town in Spain, and my job was to photograph the campaign and the clients alongside the advertisements.

The problem?

Nobody could tell me exactly where the buses were.

So I arrived two days early, studied the routes, found locations where several routes overlapped and even tracked down the West Ham depot as a backup.

When the clients arrived, we somehow managed to find the buses and get the photographs we needed.

But the real story is what happened next.

This was actually my first marketing assignment.

I've always believed that photographers and videographers need to keep developing their skills. The industry changes constantly, and the more you understand about the wider media world, the more opportunities you can create.

Photography led me into video.

Video led me into production.

And those skills eventually led me into marketing.

Surprisingly, most of the lessons haven't involved cameras at all.

They've involved people.

Competition. Trust. Pressure. Patience. Creativity. Consistency.

One particular experience at the ADDA Simfònica orchestra taught me that success isn't simply about taking great photographs.

It's about reliability, professionalism and continually striving to improve.

Even today, I still remind myself that every assignment is another opportunity to prove myself.

Should outsourcing companies be worried about AI?

It's a question I've been asking myself more and more recently.

For years, I've worked with incredibly talented retouchers, clipping specialists and editors from around the world.

At the same time, I now find myself using AI tools for many of the repetitive tasks that I once outsourced.

The technology is improving at an astonishing rate.

Meanwhile, clients are increasingly asking whether AI can reduce costs, increase efficiency and shorten delivery times.

So what happens next?

Will these companies disappear?

Or will they evolve into something entirely new?
