World Photography Day!

The reason I love my cameras is that they allow me to follow whatever makes me stop, look twice, and wonder. The camera is simply the companion that allows me to bring a little of what I saw back home.

Photography has slowly become for me:

A reason to look closer.
A reason to wait longer.
A reason to travel.
A reason to learn.
And, occasionally, a reason to stand still.

But the camera has taught me something more important:

The photograph begins before I press the shutter. It begins with curiosity.

Photography is more than a moment. It's a memory I can hold.

To witness and capture a behaviour between two kingfishers that would have otherwise disappeared unnoticed.

Masked & Majestic: Throwback to a golden afternoon spent tracking this Long-tailed Shrike through the branches, patiently waiting for that one clean look before it darted off again. Also known as the “butcher bird” for its fierce hunting habits, this little guy has a look that says “don’t test me.” Masked eyes, rusty flanks, and a tail longer than its patience for photographers 😄

Every love story begins with a simple gesture. For kingfishers, sometimes it’s a fish.

Known as “courtship feeding,” this behaviour is far more than a simple exchange of food. The fish represents the male’s ability to provide and successfully hunt, while the female’s acceptance is an important step in pair bonding. It is one of nature’s most elegant demonstrations of trust, partnership, and the continuation of a species.

A fleeting encounter lasting only seconds, yet carrying the promise of the next generation.

Spring and early summer mark the breeding season for the Common Kingfisher, a time when territories are defended, bonds are formed, and courtship reaches its peak.

Starting from the second image, this sequence captures a remarkable moment in their breeding cycle:

1. The male arrives with a freshly caught fish, non baited.
2. The female joins him on the perch.
3. She signals her interest and acceptance.
4. The fish is offered as a courtship gift.
5. The female accepts and consumes the offering.
6. Moments later, the male approaches.
7. The courtship culminates in mating.

I am glad to have had the opportunity to view this story over two consecutive days. On the first day, the exchange of fish occurred, but the female didn’t eat it. What made this encounter even more special was being able to witness and photograph the entire sequence alongside my son, and on day 2 along with his dear friend, Daniel. Sharing moments like these is one of the greatest gifts that wildlife photography has given me.

A moment of eye contact in the wild!

Face to face with precision and grace. A moment where the waves pauses… and meets your gaze.

Captured at Bempton Cliffs, home to one of the UK’s most dramatic seabird colonies managed by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, this head-on frame of a Northern Gannet is about control, symmetry, and presence.

In a world constantly moving, there are fleeting moments where everything aligns: light, motion, and intent. This was one of them.

Egyptian Goose with Ducklings!

Adult maintaining vigilance while ducklings forage nearby.

An Egyptian Goose stands alert at the water’s edge as two ducklings feed along the bank.

This species is known for strong parental behaviour, with adults closely monitoring their young during early development. Ducklings begin feeding independently soon after hatching but remain under supervision for protection from predators and environmental threats.

The upright posture of the adult indicates awareness of surroundings, while the ducklings’ activity reflects normal early-stage foraging behaviour.

Adrenaline: A split second between chaos and control.

In the silence before the plunge, there is focus.
In the plunge, there is commitment.

In stillness, power gathers!

Poised between motion and restraint, the Malabar Pit Viper rests: coiled not to strike, but to observe.

Suspended against a void of darkness, the Malabar Pit Viper coils itself around a weathered branch, an ancient symbol of patience, vigilance, and contained strength. The Quiet Witness!

In a place meant for remembrance and silence, I was met by an unexpected presence. A fox, oddly poised, alert yet unafraid, holding my gaze as if acknowledging the weight of the ground we both stood on.

Foxes are common here, yet this one stood unusually, almost conflicted in posture, as if suspended between instinct and awareness. Its unwavering eye contact dissolved the boundary between me and the fox.

Life and loss, wild and human, movement and stillness, everything converged into a single, silent exchange.

Was it simply passing through… or standing guard?

Did it sense the weight of this place, or was it I who felt seen?

In spaces meant for grief, what does it mean when life looks back at you?
