How do you feel about the night’s drawing in? Sunsets rapidly getting earlier and earlier. Having to dress up on my layers when you go out in the evenings? ⛄️

Last night was certainly one of those nights. The air temperature taking into account the windchill to derive the most important temperature, the “feels like” temperature! So it was bordering on single figures where I was doing a shoot last night with a gentle and soft breeze taking the edge further down on the temperature.

It was great to be able to do starry night time photography from about 9:30pm onwards but personally, I’d still rather have the long summer nights and balmy evenings any time! 😎

Last night was my first practice attempt at doing deep space astrophotography with just a standard camera, no telescope. I’m not much into the astronomy side of things to be honest but I do love things like this which explore the full gamut of boundaries and diversity of what you can do with a modern digital camera setup beyond just the normal selfies and pet photo snaps! I absolutely love pet photos by the way, so nothing against that kind of thing at all! 😀

I don’t know what the final result will be of what I captured last night. That’s a whole load more time spent with the computer which might break my poor little 6 year old vintage setup, as high spec as it was at the time of purchase!

Will let you know how it goes in due course! 😉😅😃

Have you ever been star gazing or looked up at the night sky at a really dark location to see the Milky Way galaxy looming above?

The Milky Way galaxy is our home galaxy. The distinctive dust cloud lane shapes and colours are what we can see of the outer edge of our own galaxy. Our galaxy itself, as vast as it is in relation to planet earth is just a mere spec within the universe of at least 2 trillion galaxies in the observable universe according to the most recent studies, putting our own personal issues into perspective wouldn’t you say? 😌

Where to find peace and tranquility at sunset or sunrise in the heart of the big city for down regulating your nervous system?! 😇😊

Big Ben and Parliament, a few different variations at sunrise and sunset from the month of August...

Early mornings just as the night sky turns into dawn and sunrise is imminent are so peaceful in and around this area, a stark contrast to the middle of the day and early evening times when the area is packed full of tourists milling about. Also the surface of the Thames is so still and you get glass window like reflections that you don't see at any other times of the day, just as day is breaking and before the river traffic starts up. I have to motivate myself to get up early for another morning shoot here when the sky isn't overcast as I have yet to capture image of the river looking like this.

For evenings, the place to be if you prefer to watch the skies turning from day to evening away from the crowds is St Thomas's Hospital Gardens. Usually very quiet and you can find a nice park bench to sit on, although on the evening I took one of the shots in this series, it was busier than usual and no benches were available that evening, but most likely it was because the weather was still warm and mild. I think now with Autumn around the corner it will be quiet once again at sunset.

Do you have a favourite quiet spot away from the hustle and bustle where you live?

Another 15 minutes of sleep or spending the very first 15 waking minutes of each day doing something that can ritually anchor and regulate your nervous system over time. The more you expose yourself to a practice that suits you, the more you build and strengthen this internal biological system that anchors and influencers so many other aspects of your daily lived experience. Physical, emotional and mental wellbeing, it’s all interconnected to your nervous system.

This is still a work in progress for me personally. An evolutionary journey. Finding out what works, what’s most efficient and what produces the longest lasting results. 20 years so far on this journey of discovery and still learning more and more all the time!

It’s not all about closing your eyes. It’s as much about the open eye daily self regulation, even more so. Visual anchors like piece of glass physical art in your home or office space or pictures on your phone that reset your nervous system baseline.

Spotted what appears to be a tiny starling roost getting under way undermeath Westminster Bridge in central London this past week.

I wonder if the numbers here will be able to increase significantly over the next month or two for us to be able to see daily murmurations during the peak winter months?

Friday morning's deep partial lunar eclipse in London.

Still working on a couple more image when I get the opportunity but for now here's 2.

The one with Big Ben shows the moon at its moment of greatest eclipse, whilst the close up shot shows the moon as it was 45 minutes before maximum coverage.

Nearly didn't get the Big Ben shot as despite a clear sky for a good 2 hours before the maximum, clouds suddenly rolled in and swallowed up the moon just as it was possible to get it and clock tower framed into a shot, so this was a very well short windows of opportunity that literally opened up! There was a momentary gap in the clouds, enough time to grab a couple of shots before the moon disappeared again as it moved behind the tower! 😍😎🌙

I use to wake up and immediately start overthinking about my to do list for the day, multi task to get the more mundane things out of the way quicker, even though I’m actually quite inefficient and ineffective at multi tasking in most situations. Can you relate?

Now a days, immediately upon waking, the first 15 minutes at least of each day is spent regulating my nervous system with some kind of practice. It’s a non negotiable. Just as important is finding a way or practice(s) which allows you to check in with yourself and down regulate your nervous system throughout the day to help you relax quicker, focus better and be more in the flow rather than the chaos.

I also love to photograph sunsets and moonrises. Watching a sunset is also an example of an activity that helps regulate and sooth our nervous system. Taking that time out to focus on just that one thing and have it to turn into a meditation or meditative state.

What regular practices do you have for regulating your nervous system?
