"Permits?" - They've almost become a swear-word for eager photographers out there, and I know some who feel that by *not* having one, they've gained a badge of honour. 🤦‍♂️
Let's not have that become our industry standard for respect, eh? 🤷‍♂️

Uluru, Australia - a great example of where it's needed, and it works.

✈️ Yes, it’s far away.
🦟 Yes, it’s full of bugs.
📋 Yes, you really do need a permit,
🌄 Yes, it’s awesome to experience,
😎 and yes, it’s most definitely worth it.

(Oh, and it happens to make a great photographic subject too...)

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi. 🇦🇪

Shot during our live series with Capture One last week across the UAE, this architectural masterpiece just commands silence from the moment you step up into the theatre of its reflection pool - a “pinch me” moment, as you witness it for the first time with your own eyes.

We were lucky this evening - arriving to a slightly hazy warm sky for sunset, we happily thought we’d already had the best of the light.

And then this happened - the sky lit up in all directions, with marble reflecting pink and orange light onto every person who was stood there watching.

This was a moment when the sky forgot what colour it's supposed to be and just threw everything at us - matched only by the perfectly illuminated mosque just below. We’d been here for nearly 3 hours, watching the sky transform through every photographic phase, but it was worth every second of waiting for this show of light and colour to arrive.

"Why do you love shooting cities so much?" - It's a question that often pops up in interviews and discussions I have with different people around the world.

And the answer is simple.
Because that shot, those circumstances, can only have happened once.
Ever.

It will never, and can never, be repeated - much like any photography that captures the real world around us, it's a moment in time that's so fleeting, even pressing the shutter 1/1000th of a second later would result in a different capture of peoples' lives.

And that's exactly what a cityscape really shows us.

Sure - it's full of incredible buildings, structures and lights - but it's mostly a frozen moment of a million peoples' day.
A moment that's never to be repeated, but now permanently on record.

That, right there, is what happened at 18:36:38 on the 5th August this year, just as I clicked the button on a rooftop sunset in Tokyo.

Big In Japan…

I’ve been visiting this incredible country for quite some years now, and with each and every trip I’m reminded of one thing - the importance of the past, especially when we’re always so focused on the future.

In Tokyo - just step a few blocks away from those brightly lit neon streets, filled with skyscrapers for as far as the eye can see, and you’ll find seemingly untouched neighbourhoods and businesses that overflow with heritage and tenacity; communities that are centuries old, carrying on with life, unchanged by outside influences.

This is a city that constantly reminds me: calm doesn’t have to only be before a storm - it can sit alongside, in the shadows, just waiting for you to visit in those moments when you need a break.

Stuck in traffic - Shanghai, China. 🇨🇳

The next time you are - look up, high up, all the way to the rooftops - and you might see me capturing that frustration on camera. (Remember to smile!)

While buildings and spaces help to define the shape of a city at night, it’s the traffic and trails that bring all that urban energy to life. The lifeblood of a metropolis, that light from these networks of roads deliver a futuristic glow, like arteries, to the towering structures that surround them.

And sometimes, just sometimes, you’ll find me appreciating those roads in their own right - just as they are. Context is great, ultra-wide cityscapes (as I have of this interchange) can look awesome, but every now and then it feels like it’s the details that matter.

“It’s just a road” - but is it really? 🚘

Each evening, that road is host to hundreds of thousands of stories, each unique, each special to its teller, and secret from everyone else around.

And there’s me, sat on one of my favourite rooftops in Shanghai, just catching the lights that carried those tales.

Next time you’re in traffic - remember - your lights might be helping me to capture yours. 📷

Hideaway - McWay Falls, Big Sur, California 🇺🇸

To call this magical little spot "hidden" would be somewhat unfair - if you somehow managed to miss the road signs, maps and posters pointing you towards McWay Falls, you’d have still seen this idyllic spot on some form of “Visit California” brochure or Big Sur route guide along the way.

But even though it’s no longer the secret little cove I’m sure it once was - it’s still no less majestic and captivating each time you get that first look over the ridge towards that constantly running waterfall, pristine beach and turqouise bay below.

And being able to camp on the overlook (there are only 2 spots, which are booked up months and months in advance) - priceless. Even if you lose a tent to the hunger of a family of chipmunks in the process.

California’s coastline is constantly changing - eroding - shifting. As with many things in life, take the opportunity to see as much of it while you still can.

Whispering - Yellowstone River, Wyoming. 🇺🇸⛰️

There's something so "crisp" about a cool morning by the riverside. While Yellowstone National Park claims the lion's share of spectacular views, step a bit further from the hotspot roads and you'll find tiny little vignettes hidden all around.

This morning was so still, so calm, so quiet - you could almost hear the trees whispering to each other. (That is, until the ducks decided they wanted a full conversation with them too..)
