A quiet everyday moment from our time staying with an Eagle Hunter family in Mongolia. Beyond the huge skies and wide open landscape, it was scenes like this that stayed with me most. A child herding goats across the plain, completely at ease, with the mountains stretched out behind. Nothing staged, nothing polished, just life carrying on as normal. Those are usually the moments that stick.

I was in Mongolia back in August and I’m only just getting round to editing the photos. Instead of stressing over picking “the best” ones, I’m going to post them in order — partly to keep myself moving, and partly because it turns the whole trip into a bit of a story as we go.

Today’s photo is the owner of the eagle hunter camp where we stayed, calm, quietly intimidating in the best way, and completely at home in that landscape. It’s one of those portraits that takes you straight back to the dust, the wind, and that big-open-sky feeling.
