Febrile Convulsions (or fever fits) 👶
Febrile convulsions, or seizures, are a relatively common childhood condition, referring to a child having a seizure (fit) when they have a high temperature of 38 degrees CF (100.4 degrees F) or above. This is usually the result of an infection.
Treatment:
• Protect them from injury by moving surrounding objects out of their way to allow the child/infant space to have the seizure safely
• Make a note of when the seizure started to keep track of how long it lasts
• When the shaking / jerking has stopped, place them in the recovery position. This will stop the child/infant swallowing any vomit and it will keep their airway open and help to prevent injury
• Stay with them until they recover
• If the seizure lasts for less than five minutes, phone your GP or NHS 111
• If the seizure lasts for longer than five minutes, dial 999 to ask for an ambulance 🚑
