And then life interrupts you for a second.

A sunset.
The sound of the ocean.
A moment where your brain finally goes quiet.

And you feel a little more grounded. A little more present. Like life is not only made of problems to solve.

Maybe happiness isn’t this huge life achievement everyone keeps chasing.

Maybe it’s just these tiny moments where you stop fighting your life for a minute and simply feel it.

Vanlife Diaries - We Left Comfort Behind and Found Ourselves on the Road

For a long time, I thought growth came from having a plan, knowing the next step, and staying in control.

A few years ago, we had a comfortable life in London. We knew where we’d be sleeping, what our week would look like, and what tomorrow would probably bring. Life felt safe, predictable, and familiar.

Then we traded that predictability for vanlife.

Now we wake up in different places, meet new people, navigate unexpected challenges, and often have no idea what the next few days will bring.

Is it always easy? Not even close.

There are days when I miss certainty. Days when everything feels harder than it needs to be. But some of the most meaningful moments of my life have arrived on the other side of that uncertainty. I was curious enough to see what was beyond the door.

Moments like this. Opening the van doors to a view we never expected. Watching the sun rise somewhere new. Feeling connected to the world instead of rushing through it.

The truth is, safety has its place. We all need it. But if we never leave what’s familiar, we only get to meet a small version of ourselves.

Leaving our comfortable life behind wasn’t only about travelling. It was about choosing experience over routine. Every time I’ve chosen experience over certainty, I’ve come back with something more valuable than comfort: a broader perspective, deeper confidence, and a reminder that life is meant to be lived, not just managed.

Because while uncertainty can be uncomfortable, it has a way of making you feel deeply, undeniably alive.

Exploring Odeleite and Guadiana River - Vanlife in Algarve, Portugal

Tucked into the hills of eastern Algarve, the Odeleite Lake and Guadiana River offer some of the most peaceful views in Portugal. We spent a few nights at Almada d'Ouro Motorhome Park in Alcarias, perched perfectly between the water and the sky. From there, trails wind down toward the Guadiana - great for a quiet run or walk.

But the real magic? The sunsets over Odeleite Lake, painting the landscape in soft gold and deep blues. A hidden corner of Algarve worth slowing down for.

Algarve Morning Magic: Sunrise at Praia da Alagoa, Portugal

At sunrise, Praia da Alagoa in Algarve feels like a dream. Soft pink hues paint the sky and sea, gently lighting the quiet beach and the winding wooden walkway along the coast. Just one person, a lone figure walking a dog, shares this early moment. The world is still, hushed, suspended - yet the sun keeps rising.

We’ve been living in our van here for a while, and witnessing mornings like this feels like such a privilege. A peaceful start to another day on the southern edge of Portugal.

A Hidden Moment in Silves, Portugal

Arriving in Silves as vanlifers, we found ourselves parked where many others do, behind a supermarket and on the blue-marked spaces some stores set aside for travellers. It is the kind of place most people would overlook without a second thought. But sometimes, the most unexpected beauty appears in the most ordinary settings.

While sitting in the van, I noticed a stork’s nest not far away, with two adult storks feeding their chicks before flying off to bring back more food. A quiet scene, completely unplanned, and somehow unforgettable.

Life has a way of giving you these moments when you pause long enough to notice them.

Vanlife in Romania: When a Simple Coffee Becomes an Epic Mountain Moment

Our experience at this salt mine was genuinely surreal.

Unlike other salt mines, you enter on foot in Turda Salt Mine, walking through a long descending tunnel before choosing how to reach the main chambers. You can take the lift or tackle the stairs. The lift is impressive but busy, especially on weekends and during holiday season. We went down by the stairs and came back up by lift, and the view from the top of the main chamber is nothing short of spectacular.

The lighting installations feel like pure art. The atmosphere is futuristic, almost Blade Runner-like, and completely unexpected underground. There are also art pieces and entertainment areas, including a lake where you can rent boats and row inside the salt mine.
Not entirely our thing, it slightly dilutes the raw magic of the place, but clearly a highlight for many visitors.

On the way out, we took the secondary exit instead of returning to the main entrance. That meant walking through a 600 metre tunnel and ending up on the opposite side of the village, about 3.5 km from the main car park.
Off the beaten path, exactly how we like it. It took just over an hour to walk back to Ginger, make dinner and crash.

Practical notes if you plan to visit with your home on wheels 🚐 :
Free parking is available outside the official Turda Salt Mine car park. There are no services around, but it is perfect for a one-night stop. Visiting in the late afternoon, as we did, helps avoid the heavy crowds of morning and midday. We spent a little over two hours inside, but you could easily stay half a day. And yes, it is chilly down there, so bring a layer.

One of the most unexpected places we have visited in Romania, and absolutely worth it.

The New Year is fake, but the reset feeling is very real.

This is my first run in a long time. Not a transformation story, not a fitness glow up, just the reality of starting again after months of inactivity.

The New Year is a powerful psychological reset. Research calls it the fresh start effect. We are more likely to change habits when we attach them to a meaningful date like January 1st, a birthday, or even “next Monday”. The date itself is made up, but the motivation it creates is real.

This run was not about speed, weight loss, or becoming athletic overnight. It was about showing up for a New Year resolution and taking care of my body, even when it felt uncomfortable and imperfect.

If you are restarting your fitness journey, getting back into running, or trying to build healthier habits in the New Year, this is your reminder that starting slow still counts.
