For so long I’ve only ever played piano when nobody is around but I asked myself what’s the point in making music if nobody is going to hear it! So here goes my first improv on the internet! I felt inspired as I was going through seaside photos from my time in LA and so I decided to capture where that took me. I’d be very interested to know what you see when you close your eyes and listen to it! There’s no wrong answers and I’d be honoured to have any of your thoughts in the comments below.

Hollywood. Wow.
I have to say that was one of the best treks I have ever done and the view was the best reward of all. The Hollywood sign, the wisdom tree and the sunsets were all inspirational and have sparked a huge amount of creativity. Since leaving university I have felt a bit lost and anxious for what the future holds but seeing these beautiful places makes all of those worries look stupid. I hope everyone has a moment like this and realises life is actually quite beautiful and worth living x

Lake District: Between Rain and Light
Exploring atmosphere, movement and the shifting balance between shadow and illumination.
It was a joy painting this commission and it is always an honour to be asked to do what I love most. Finding motion in something so immovable as mountains was a journey I really enjoyed, allowing the brighter colours to peer through the glum British weather makes for exciting contrasts in a painting and so the landscape of the Lake District is a perfect subject.

A snippet of a great week in Devon over my birthday. Bantham beach always reminds me of childhood holidays and so it was really special going back. Cuddles with the dog (who also did a 5hr disappearance…) lots of photography, swimming and laughs. The sea always comforts me and sparks my creativity so hopefully once a new studio is sorted I can resume my practice as per normal!!

Sunset on Barnes Common.
Painting this went through many phases and intriguing stages. At first I wanted to create an exact replica of the landscape I know so well but then frustration kicked in and that’s when the knives came out (palette knives don’t worry guys). I scraped away to get this texture which in a way mimicked the haziness of the incredible sunset kissing the tops of the trees.
Looking at my painting now makes me miss dog walks with my beautiful dog Barley who is now a mother of 6 gorgeous little golden retriever pups. She’ll be back next week thankfully!
It will be exhibited in Putney School of Art and Design summer exhibition running from 6th June - 1st July incase any of you are interested in coming seeing not only this piece but all of the other amazing pieces by other students of Hopefully see you then!
Updates of my degree show is underway I’ve just been so busy and unable to keep up to date on social media!

The Coast of Colour
Oil on A3 canvas paper

Tried something a bit different here—stepped away from my usual flick, scrape, wipe and hope technique (patent pending) to create this imaginary landscape, loosely inspired by Durdle Door.
It’s not intrinsically about my dissertation nor my degree show (which I will write about in more detail soon) but it had elements of music and colour theories that I played with in preparation for my degree show that interested me. The way I found the edge of cliffs mimicked the sound waves and that was perhaps due to the fact I was so focused on the relationship between visuals and music. I am contemplating fitting it into my degree show in some way but it has been so mental recently it’s only until now I get to think about it!

Putney Railway Bridge

This was a painting inspired by the pink skies that often leave Putney Railway Bridge as a silhouette. I find it a great source of inspiration at this time of year. Although the district line is often noisy and delayed the peace and homely comfort I find from this view is a joy. This being said it has been a bu**er to paint. Trying to use a ruler and be architecturally accurate is not a skill of mine however learning to paint in this way at Putney School of Art has been a fascinating experience.

This painting was inspired by a photograph I took between the London Bridge and Tower Bridge area late at night. I decided to crop in on a detail of the photograph I liked which happened to be on the right hand side where all the reflections were. I loved the challenge of painting wet pavements as the surface is rich for interesting colours and shapes, something that always fascinates me in paintings. I saturated the colours to a bluer hue as I thought it made it a more colourful take on what was a rather bleak wet and miserable evening.

Skyscrapers.
With this small a4 painting I wanted to achieve a sense of vertigo. A challenge with such a small border but I felt I achieved this by using straight angles and accentuating the sharp shapes found in skyscrapers. This is another piece that is part of my ‘London Calling’ project.

London Horizon Reimagined.
This piece is my second piece in my ‘London Calling’ exhibition. It is take on London’s skyline, but not as we usually see it. I wanted to capture the energy and movement of the city rather than just its physical structures. The reflections and bold colors give it a dreamlike feel, almost as if the city is shifting and evolving as we view it. It’s a mix of reality and imagination-familiar landmarks are there, but they’re distorted and reimagined, making you see London in a different way. For me, this is more about the vibe of the city than an exact representation by using suggestive mark making with my brush mimicking the presence of buildings and their reflections. I felt very free creating this piece as I wasn’t restricted to an image I wanted to replicate, it was purely from my imagination and feeling able to do that again after such a long time felt great. Gaining my confidence back from a lengthy creative drought by picking up the brush and seeing where it takes me made me fall in love with that feeling of when I paint again and reminded me of why I love it so much.

Waterloo

The first painting I completed for my ‘London Calling’ exhibition. Inspired by a photo I took outside Waterloo station on a sunny yet rainy afternoon, I was drawn to the striking reflections and geometry of the scene. The lines leading us to the vanishing point gave it a sense of urgency and reflected the busy bustling nature of London which I often hate commuting in but for art sake I love! By enhancing the colors and movement, I created my own interpretation of a place I’ve known well growing up. Painting it felt poignant, making it a natural choice as one of my statement pieces.
