1963 American Billboard 100 Number One Hits.
In 1963, the US Billboard Hot 100 reflected a year of remarkable musical variety before the British Invasion transformed popular music. Twenty-one different songs reached number one, including classics such as “Walk Like a Man” by The Four Seasons, “It’s My Party” by Lesley Gore, and “Blue Velvet” by Bobby Vinton.
The year also featured a historic milestone with “Sukiyaki” by Kyu Sakamoto becoming the first Japanese-language song to top the chart. The longest-running number one was “Sugar Shack” by Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs, spending five weeks at the summit. It was a year dominated by doo-wop, surf, pop, and vocal groups, setting the stage for the arrival of The Beatles in 1964.
