Talla Reservoir and surrounding hills from the Silver Jubilee Road, near Tweedsmuir. I never tire of this view, even on a dull day it is truly spectacular. The Silver Jubilee Road is a forest track that loops through a commercial forest plantation, providing commanding views of the entire length of the Talla Reservoir and of the Menzion Valley on the other side of Muckle Knowe hill.

Startled geese on Loch Venachar. This was one of those right place, right time moments. I don't normally use black and white, as it isn't a true-to-life representation, but on this occasion I couldn't help myself. Applying a monochrome treatment enhanced the reflections of the clouds and really helped reinforce the drama of the overcast sky.

Glorious sunset looking towards Ailsa Craig. I took this on the way back from a day of cycling up in Sterling, having watched the most incredible sunset I have ever seen all the way along the Maybole bypass. With no clear view of the horizon, I just had to keep driving until I got to the layby opposite IFF. I didn't have a tripod with me, so I had to wedge my arms in the van window to steady the camera for the long exposure and hope for the best. This was the result. Not touched for colour at all; these colours are true to life.

Taken on a wonderfully still morning in November 2025. Although the conditions were almost perfect, I didn't quite catch a complete mirror reflection of the surrounding hills. Even so, it was one of those rare mornings when everything was silent and it genuinely felt as though the world had stopped for a while.

A truly scenic gravel bike ride taking in Loch Trool and Loch Dee along with waterfalls at Shiel Burn, Bucahn Burn and Corse Knowe of White Lgaan. The route also incorporates the Giant Axe Head and the sweeping valley the Southern Upland Way follows either side of Glenhead Burn.

This route can be combined with another route (due to be posted shortly), called Craigmurchie Hill Loop, as they share a common start and finish point. Doing so, makes a truly memorable day out.

All of the waterfalls are best visited after moderate rain, although the Buchan Burn Falls are impressive all year round.

Mobile phone reception is pretty good throughout the route. Nearest cafe and toilet facilities are at the Glentrool Visitor Centre (which you will pass on the way to the start). It is worth stopping off at the Visitor Centre Car Park notice board before starting this route as the Southern Section of the Loch Trool loop is sometimes closed at short notice. There is also a new cafe: Wriggly Tin Cafe just after you cross Glenhead Burn bridge but before before Buchan Burn Bridge.

Buchan Burn waterfalls, at Buchan Burn Bridge, Glentrool.

A static image from an up and coming gold route video which is in production and should drop at the end of this week. The route is full of eye candy with lochs, waterfalls and sweeping landscapes. It's also pretty unusual in that it is a figure 8 shape, so it can be tackled in parts or as a whole. Stay tuned!

A forest based gravel bike ride with multiple, sweeping views of the River Stinchar, Loch Bradan and waterfalls. Good all year round, although the waterfalls are at their best in the autumn or after moderate rain. Patchy mobile phone coverage (at best). Nearest toilet facilities are at Barr Community Centre. There is a cafe at the shop/Post Office in Barr although this has limited opening times.

The best view is at about the 9.5 mile mark, above and behind Black Row. Loch Bradan is a great break point for a rest.
