UK drone rules, simplified, mean you must register (Operator ID for 250g+ drones, Flyer ID for 100g+), keep your drone in sight below 400ft (120m), stay 50m from people (or 30m with C2 mark), keep 150m from residential/industrial areas, avoid airports, and never fly over crowds; you're responsible for safe, legal flight and must label drones with your Operator ID.
Before You Fly (Registration)
Flyer ID (Pilot): Needed for drones 100g+. Take a free online test.
Operator ID (Owner): Needed for drones 250g+ or 100g+ with a camera. Costs ~£11.79/year, register via CAA, must be 18+ (parent registers for minors).
Label: Mark your drone with your Operator ID.
Key Flying Rules (The Drone Code)
Keep it in Sight: Always maintain direct visual line of sight (VLOS).
Height Limit: Fly below 400ft (120m).
Distance from People:
Stay 50m away from uninvolved people (or 30m with a UK C2 mark drone in low-speed mode).
Do not fly over crowds.
Distance from Areas: Keep 150m from residential, recreational, commercial, or industrial areas (50m from individual buildings).
Airspace: Stay clear of airports and airfields.
Night Flying: Use a green flashing light.
Be Responsible: Don't fly if tired, unwell, or under the influence of alcohol/drugs.
New Drone Markings (From 2026)
New drones (bought after 2026) will have a UK Class Mark (e.g., UK C2) and may need Remote ID, depending on their class, affecting where you can fly (e.g., C2 allows closer flying to people).
Consequences
Flying recklessly, endangering aircraft, or violating rules can lead to severe fines or imprisonment.
