Sadly I didn't take half as many pictures as I thought I had.

Other than East Kirkbys Fire Works night this weekend marks my last 1940s event of 2026.
Always a sad time for me as these events keep me going and give me things to look forward too.

I will be at Papplewick Pump House at somepoint this weekend.

After this weekend my attention will turn to trying to find Second World War things to keep me occupied during the winter months that lay ahead.

My first Tiger Day at Bovington was a few weekends ago now but I have to say it was a fantastic day out.

In the corner of the tiny Dorset village of Warmwell stands Holy Trinity Church.

In its grounds lay British and Commonwealth aswell a Pole and Czech Airmen.

Five of these men are what Winston Churchill dubbed 'The Few'

Pilot Officer Harold John Ackroyd

KIA after his Spitfire was hit and caught fire on the Afternoon of October 7th 1940.
He died of burns and injuries the following day.

Flight Lieutenant John Connolly Kennedy

On 13th July 1940 he was bounced by German Messerschmitts shortly after he had shot down a Dornier Do 17 bomber.

He attempted to force land his damaged Hawker Hurricane at RAF Warmwell but it stalled and crashed while he tried to avoid power lines.

He became the first Australian born pilot to be killed in the Battle Of Britain.

Squadron Leader Terence Gunion Lovell-Gregg

Gregg led his flight of Hawker Hurricanes into a swarm of ME110 twin engined fighters at 15,000ft at around 6pm on August 15th.

His aircraft was hit and immediately started to burn. He dived and managed to limp his Hurricane back towards Warmwell but eye witnesses say he veered off and ploughed into nearby woodland He was thrown clear of the wreckage but died of injuries before help could arrive.

Sgt Sidney R.E.Wakeling

Not much is known about is death but what is known is he was killed flying Hawker Hurricane V7250 on 24th August 1940 near Dorchester.

Sgt. Alan Norman Feary.

Sgt.Feary was in 609 sqn when he climbed aboard Supermarine Spitfire N3238 late afternoon on August 25th 1940.
At approximately 1630 hours his aircraft was bounced from behind by German fighters (most likely 109s ) over Yeovil.

Although he managed to bail out of his stricken aircraft sadly he was too low for the parachute to function correctly.

Sgt.Feary was a great loss to both his squadron and the RAF as he had already shot down 5 enemy aircraft giving him ACE status.

Sgt Jaroslav Hlavoc

A Czech born airman was shot down and killed in Hawker Hurricane P3421 at Worgret.

Needless to say this was a seriously humbling and deeply moving experience for me.

I did what I do to all war graves I encounter and introduced myself,told them why I was there and what year it is. I also always tell them that we won and what they sacrificed was not forgotten!
