Mapperley Tunnel is a disused railway tunnel located in Gedling, Nottinghamshire, England. It was built in the early 1870s as part of the Great Northern Railway's Derbyshire and Staffordshire Extension, connecting Colwick Junction in Nottingham to Egginton Junction in South Derbyshire. The tunnel is approximately 1,044 meters (1,132 yards) long and features four air shafts, nicknamed "pepper pots," which were constructed to provide ventilation.
Built between 1870 and 1875, with six shafts sunk for construction and three retained as ventilators
Originally built to serve Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire coalfields, later extended to passenger traffic
Closed on April 4, 1960, due to subsidence and structural issues caused by nearby coal mining activities
Experienced a significant roof collapse in 1925, which was repaired, but further subsidence in later years led to its eventual closure.
Today, the tunnel remains a notable piece of local history, with some sections still accessible, although parts have been filled with earth or rubble. A new road, the Gedling Access Road, was built nearby, but the tunnel itself was left intact.
