Foggy morning adventure at Padley Gorge with my photography partner-in-crime

A slow wander through the misty woodland, soaking in the atmosphere, and an unexpected encounter with some very curious local cows šŸ„āœØ

Definitely out of my photographic comfort zone, but the conditions were incredible and with a bit of guidance from my talented photography friend, I even managed to come away with a couple of shots I’m really happy with, Grateful for mornings like this!

Whitby Abbey, field of Lacy phacelia at Sunset on the 8th of August 2025 (7:35pm)

On a recent trip to my favourite stretch of coastline, I came across an angle of the iconic Whitby Abbey that I’d never really noticed before, despite it being one of the most photographed sites around. I took a few test shots during the day, but something told me to come back later. I returned for sunset and golden hour, and wow... I was rewarded with one of the most breathtaking sunsets I’ve ever witnessed. Absolutely unforgettable.

Juvenile Dipper or Cinclus cinclus is one of the only songbirds adapted to life in fast-flowing, cold-water streams. Unlike typical perching birds, dippers dive and swim underwater to forage for aquatic insects and larvae.

They’re equipped with several fascinating adaptations:
• Dense, waterproof plumage
• A nictitating membrane that protects their eyes while submerged
• Flaps to close their nostrils
• High hemoglobin concentration, allowing longer dives

Dippers also exhibit a characteristic bobbing or ā€œdippingā€ motion when perched near water, thought to be a form of visual communication or a way to stabilize their vision near moving water.

They remain active year-round, often seen walking underwater against strong currents, a rare and impressive sight among songbirds.

I have always wanted to see a dipper in the wild, so getting the chance to photograph one was a dream come true!

šŸ“øNorthern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus)
ā €
With their iridescent plumage, striking crests, and dramatic aerial displays, lapwings are one of the most captivating birds
ā €
Lapwings are known for their tumbling flight patterns, used in mating displays and to distract predators from their nests. Their name even comes from the ā€œlappingā€ sound their wings make in flight!
ā €
These ground-nesting birds favor farmland, wetlands, and grasslands—but habitat loss and agricultural intensification are major threats to their populations. Conservation efforts are underway to protect nesting sites and promote wildlife-friendly farming.
ā €
šŸ”¬ Scientific name: Vanellus vanellus
šŸ—ŗļø Range: Europe, Asia, wintering in North Africa and India
šŸ“‰ Conservation status: Near Threatened (IUCN)
ā €
Watch out in spring for their aerial stunts and their haunting ā€œpee-witā€ calls—it’s how they got their other name: the peewit!

šŸ“ø Species Spotlight: Black-necked Grebe (Podiceps nigricollis)
This striking waterbird, known for its red eyes and golden feather tufts during breeding season, is a master of transformation. Outside breeding season, its plumage fades to a more subdued black and white—but it’s no less remarkable.

✨ What makes the Black-necked Grebe truly fascinating is its migratory behavior. It undertakes one of the most energy-intensive molts of any bird, becoming flightless for several weeks each year. During this time, large flocks gather on saline lakes, relying on dense aquatic invertebrates like brine shrimp for sustenance.

šŸ“Habitat: Shallow lakes, marshes, and saline wetlands across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

What looks like another sunny day becomes an ethereal dreamscape: golden foliage, cerulean skies, and cliffs that feel like they’ve been pulled from another dimension.

Portugal hits different in infrared.
Shot this surreal scene in Albufeira, Portugal with a 590nm IR filter, where the hotel complex, road crossing, and street sign take on a retro visual aesthetic
There’s something about the otherworldly hues that just match the heat, energy, and vibe of Albufeira in high season.

Infrared photography doesn’t just capture a place, it enables us to captures a mood, a feeling, a world of unseen light!

šŸŒ„ Chrome Hill & Parkhouse Hill - The Dragon’s Back Ridge šŸ‰

Another shot take more recently of the stunning view of Chrome Hill, this was taken on Sunday the 9th of March 2025 at 6:34am just as the sun came up, some better light this time, but conditions were windy with some haze, this was taken from the same spot as before but with a slightly wider composition, think I will try a different spot next time and hopefully get some even better weather conditions.

šŸŒ„ Chrome Hill & Parkhouse Hill - The Dragon’s Back Ridge šŸ‰

A stunning view of Chrome Hill, which, when paired with Parkhouse Hill, is known as the Dragon’s Back Ridge. This hidden gem in Derbyshire’s Peak District was recently introduced to me by a close friend, and I couldn’t wait to explore it. This shot was taken on my first visit in early January this year.

While the sunrise didn’t quite show up and I had some vehicle issues that cut the trip short, we still had an amazing time. The incredible weather conditions and breathtaking scenery more than made up for the hiccups.

I can already see many future trips here to fully experience all this place has to offer. Can’t wait to come back! 🌿✨
