Some photographs happen first time.
Others take weeks, months… sometimes even years.

This image of St Luke’s Church in Ousby — on the edge of the North Pennines — is very much a work in progress. Normally, I’d never share an unfinished photograph, but as social media becomes a curated feed of our best work, sometimes the process behind our photos goes unseen.

The truth is, the more time we spend with a subject, the more we begin to understand it — and the stronger the photograph becomes.

In this week’s Moments & Meaning, I explore why some photographs need time to evolve. Read the full article here:

The best photographs take time.

Many photographers never revisit a subject. But sometimes, it takes weeks, months — even years — for the story to reveal itself.

In this week’s Moments & Meaning, I explore how the best photographs evolve over time.

The next issue is out on Wednesday, 6th May.

What’s missing from your landscape photos?

Filmmakers understand — better than most photographers — the need to connect with an audience at an emotional level.

And the most reliable way to do that is through story.

In this week’s Moments & Meaning, I explore the missing piece — and how a simple shift in thinking (and a basic understanding of grammar) can help you tell better stories.

Are we too obsessed with finding somewhere new?

There is a thrill in discovering a new location, but the places we return to time and time again often offer the biggest rewards.

In this week's Moments and Meaning, I discuss why the secret, as with most things in life, is finding a balance.

The next issue is out on Wednesday, 22nd April.

As a photographer, it is important to master technique.

But perfectly exposed, pin-sharp images are not the pinnacle of great photography; they are the foundation.

Often, the problem isn’t how you take the photo, it’s what you choose to point the camera at in the first place.

In this week’s Moments & Meaning, I explore why growth as a photographer isn’t about improving your technique; it’s about developing better taste.

Does a photo mean as much to you when you don’t know who took it?

If you have been following my work for a while, you may have begun to recognise my style. Did you recognise this as one of my images… and is that what made you stop and look?

In this week’s Moments & Meaning, I explore why good isn’t always enough — and why the person behind the image is often as important as the image itself.

Even our best work is still ignored.

Not because it isn’t good, but because “good” isn’t necessarily what people respond to.

In this week's Moments and Meaning, I discuss why provenance matters now, more than ever before.

The next issue is out on Wednesday, 8th April.

Not every outing with your camera will result in a masterpiece.

Occasionally, you’ll come home with a banger.
Most of the time, you’ll come home with something that's… fine.

That’s photography.

In this week’s Moments & Meaning, I write about the creative rollercoaster — and why making progress means learning to navigate the highs and lows.
