Riverside Baptist Church / Carmel Presbyterian Chapel

Two modern 1970s chapels tucked out of the way in Port Talbot Town Centre.

Both were built together to replace two places of worship demolished for the redevelopment of Aberafan town centre.

Riverside replaced the English Baptist Chapel on Water Street, and Carmel replaced its namesake which was located just across the river, on the site of the current shopping centre.

Both opened in 1975 and continue to be used as places of worship and community venues.

The main chapel spaces are quite striking and modern with vaulted ceilings and angular timber beams supporting the roofs.c

Fantastic news that Port Talbot has been shortlisted for the UK town of culture, da iawn pawb!

I'm restarting my series of posts from my archive showcasing local culture with Angela Vaughan John.

Angela has had a distinguished career lecturing in history and as a writer and biographer.

Born in Port Talbot and now living in West Wales, her work has included: Welsh women's history, women's employment in Victorian Britain and biographies of Lady Charlotte Guest.

Angela's best known works locally are:

'The Actors Crucible' a study of the towns greatest stars and the culture, people and institutions that supported them

'Behind the Scenes: The Dramatic Lives of Philip Burton' a biography of the mentor who saw Richard Jenkins become the internationally famous actor Richard Burton.

Di Botcher is a Welsh actress from Port Talbot, born and still living in Taibach.

Her father Bernard was an pianist and played the organ for the Taibach Panto and Cymric Choir.

She trained at Warwick University and the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

Known to many for her career in television, including Belonging and Stella, she is currently a series regular in Casualty.

Di has also had a notable stage and musical career including Cats and Follies, she has a fantastic singing voice.

She is pictured here at the opening gala performance at the Michael Sheen Theatre, Ysgol Bae Baglan in 2016.

Jackson Lucitt is a singer/songwriter from Port Talbot.

Drawing on his personal experiences in his writing, his songs explore working class culture, relationships and mental health.

A regular in local venues who promote live original music, he has also released several singles to streaming services, in 2022 he performed at the In It Together festival in Margam.

Outside of his own music, Jackson runs Shiny Vinyl Presents, promoting other local talent.

Stuart Broad is an actor and writer from Port Talbot.

His work Iniquity/Camwedd, tells the story of Dic Penderyn, a working class martyr who is buried in the churchyard at St Marys, Aberafan.

The play has visited the Edinburgh Fringe, and has now been adapted into a screenplay which is in production through his company Calon Films.

A recent workshop I photographed for National Youth Arts Trust at their free youth theatre group in Port Talbot.

The group are currently working on a writing project with local writer Holly Carpenter.

Several of the other workshops run by 'visiting' creatives and professionals have actually been from Port Talbot.

Christina Modestou, is an actress and singer from Sandfields, Port Talbot.

Attending Sandfields Comprehensive School, she went on to train in London and is now having a successful career in musical theatre and teaching.

Notably she played Anne Boleyn in 'Six the Musical' during it's early beginnings in London, and also returned to sing on the official cast recording album in 2018.

This cast recording went platinum this week after selling over a million copies since it's release.

Port Talbot Tidal Harbour

The skyline here is changing day by day, one unloader is now well on it's way to being dismantled in this shot from 25th March 2026.

Today an announcement was made of £64m to transform the harbour into a new facility to produce floating off-shore wind turbines.

Sally Jones, of Welsh origin, though born in London, has been 'one of ours' since 1967 when she took up a librarian post in Port Talbot, and hasn't left since.

A prolific and celebrated writer, poet, historian, biographer - Sally has had an enormous impact on the cultural history of Port Talbot and further afield.

Writing 'The History of Port Talbot' 'Welcome to Town' and 'Dic Penderyn: The Man and the Martyr' Sally has also been a prominent and key member of the Port Talbot Historical Society for many years.

Beyond that, Sally has and continues to be an active volunteer on many local groups, societies and initiatives to benefit the town and it's people, including recent work with Calon Afan.

In her own words:

“If I could describe Port Talbot as a person, it would be somebody who is knowledgeable, or anxious to know more. They would be ambitious, welcoming, and friendly.

“I’ve never been made to feel like an outsider, and I can’t imagine being anywhere else. I am so grateful that I decided to apply for that job in Port Talbot all those years ago.”

Town of Culture/Tref Diwylliant

Dumpy Biscuit, written by local actor/writer Holly Carpenter was produced in Port Talbot in 2024.

With a cast and crew packed with local talent including Georgia Warlow, Jalisa Phoenix-Roberts, Anna Sophia-Tutton, Helen John and Sam Carpenter.

The production transformed the hall at The New Plaza into an intimate theatre space to perform the play - the first performance at the venue.

With audiences coming from the local community and further afield, the play explored an authentic story based in Port Talbot.

Pictured here is the first table read of the script by the cast.
