We wish that we knew who the photographer was of this postcard view of Children’s Corner on Scarborough’s South Bay. The groups of people it depicts are lovely! The postmark is dated 1904.

We’ve been contacted by a member of the Watson family, originally from Sheffield. Some of their family photos by Scarborough photographers were sold online in the past and they are trying to trace them. Please get in touch with us if you know where they are. It would be lovely if the family could see these images of their ancestors. Thanks.

This photo seems to predate the building of the in 1867. So it must have been taken soon after the photographer Enoch Barraclough (1831-1901) first arrived in Scarborough. Although taken by Barraclough it has been sold by John Whitfield a chemist whose business open in 1867. Whitfield advertised a stock of photographic materials and that he had three darkrooms to let to travelling photographers.

Henry Osguthorpe was a Scarborough photographer who came here from Sheffield about 1870. After his death in 1883 his wife Mary Ann took over the business, later joined by their sons. The Osguthorpe Brothers moved to Spennymoor in County Durham in about 1900, but Mary stayed in Scarborough.

You can see this Carte de Visite and others in an exhibition Castle Book Bindery in Scarborough Market Hall & Vaults from tomorrow. Part of Big Ideas By The Sea
