‘Outline One’ and ‘Outline Two’ by BOYD & GROGAN. Ink pen applied to old family portraits with images heat pressed onto canvas.

‘Once upon a time the only filter on people’s faces, were the ones created using an old biro pen and your grandmother's TV times to doodle on while you waited to hear about her day.

Worryingly there is now an increase in what has been coined ‘snapchat Dysmorphia’ a result of the accessibility to manipulate images online.’

Susan Boyd & Kristel Grogan met in 2011 whilst studying BA Fine Art Textiles at Orkney College UHI. They have worked in collaboration on each other’s work ever since.

In 2019 they decided to combine their artistic approach, creating art in a single effort where all their pieces are made through a process of partnership, allowing equal input and development.

Although based on separate Islands within Orkney the lockdown restrictions solidified and encouraged the notion of duality in their approach to their art. Their similar upbringings from Sanday & Stronsay aiding an understanding of where each other’s ideas come from.

Working with a multidisciplinary fine art approach, Boyd & Grogan’s first focus is on the subject, second is medium, and third is space.

It is always Boyd & Grogan’s aim to create work that is provocative and informative, and the subject matter is what focuses their outcome.

B O Y D & G R O G A N always strive to make work that Instigates inquisitiveness in our viewers and we use our art to share what we feel are important and relevant issues.
We were delighted that our last exhibition had encouraged people to research elements from the show on topics they had not necessarily engaged with or knew much about, it also allowed for reflection on their own lives and experiences.
You may have noticed in the Orcadian this week that our work was described as ‘have fun drawing on old photographs’ which sadly missed the emphasis on the ‘Snapchat Dysmorphia’ that was mentioned as part of our bio.
Almost all social media platforms have created filters that can manipulate facial aesthetics to the point where people no longer look like themselves.
The images of family members we used were of huge importance to us.
We chose old photographs as they are unedited and the layers of ink (both heat pressed and drawn on to the canvas) is representative of the modern day filters on social media.

"I felt the Barbie dolls were a representation of how much women lose themselves in Thier responsibilities in society. We are expected to fulfil so many roles in life, a wife, a mother, a carer, a career a homemaker etc that we can lose ourselves. Even through all these roles we expected to always look beautiful and always have a smile on our face. I felt the broken dolls with flawless faces represented this perfectly"

Thank you Sarah Stevenson for encapsulating our concept in her words.
