Butterfly House - Grand Designs🦋
Hidden away in the countryside sits the extraordinary Butterfly House, one of the most unusual homes ever featured on the TV programme Grand Designs. Designed by architect Laurie Chetwood, the house was inspired by the life cycle of a butterfly, with sweeping wing like canopies, suspended furniture and an experimental design that blurred the line between architecture and nature. It became one of the programme’s most memorable builds when it was showcased in 2003.
After the family moved out in 2012, the house was left to the elements. During lockdown in 2020 the family returned with plans to clear the property and transform it into an eco-friendly community hub that local people could enjoy. Despite those ambitions, the project never happened and today the once celebrated home has once again been reclaimed by nature.
