Photographing in black and white is a mindful practice that invites you to slow down and engage deeply with your surroundings. Black and white photography encourages you to focus on composition, texture, and light. It requires an awareness of contrast and shadows, prompting you to see the world with fresh eyes.

Most of us photographers have a favourite lens. For me it is my Canon 100mm Macro F2.8 lens. This lens allows me to focus on the intricate details of my subjects, encouraging me to slow down and truly engage with the moment. The clarity and sharpness it provides help me capture the subtle nuances of light and texture. Working with this lens enhances my photography in a mindful way so that I am present and connected to my environment.
Which is your favourite lens?

Sometimes, it is good to leave the camera behind and just experience your surroundings in order to grow your understanding of light, framing, composition, and timing. Spending time immersed in what is in front of you without taking a picture is a valuable exercise in being mindful.

Mindful Photography Tip - Texture and Detail
In mindful photography, focus on the details and textures in your compositions. Immerse yourself in the moment, be guided by your senses as you observe light, shadow, and form. Before taking a photo, pause to connect with your subject, producing more meaningful photographs.

The last few days it has begun to feel a little more like Spring. The sun is shining, the birds in the garden are busy collecting bits and pieces to build nests and the fields around are full of frolicking lambs. I love springtime. For me it is the promise of new beginnings, regeneration and hope.
I have selected an image to share with you that represents the season. My image is a multiple exposure of apple blossom I captured whilst on a mindful walk with my mother. My mother has dementia, and although her memory is fading she still loves to walk out in the fields. In truth, I do not know how many more walks with her I will have. So I cherish the opportunity to still be able to walk with her and capture mindful memories along the way.
On this particular day the apple trees were in full boom. The blossom was stunning. My mother and I stood for several minutes just observing the spectacle. I wanted to capture the light and airy feel of the blossom in my camera. I felt that a multiple exposure would create the effect I wanted to fill the frame. I have further enhanced the image in post production to mute the colours and soften the image. The image now has a vintage feel to it which is in keeping with the subject.
This photograph is a beautiful reminder of a special moment with my lovely Mum.

Spending time in nature can have a profound impact on our wellbeing. Being outdoors and engaging with the natural environment can lead to numerous positive effects, both mentally and physically. It often results in reduced stress levels and a clearer mind, it encourages relaxation and a break from the demands of daily life. This improves our mood and increases feelings of happiness, satisfaction and gratitude.

Furthermore, nature provides opportunities for physical activity, which can enhance physical health and boost energy levels. Whether it's walking through a woodland, hiking up a mountain, or a stroll around the local park, these activities can promote cardiovascular health and increase overall fitness. Besides, exposure to natural sunlight helps in the production of vitamin D, which is crucial for maintaining healthy bones and a strong immune system.

Nature also helps our creativity and inspiration. Time spent outdoors in nature can stimulate the senses and can lead to new ideas and perspectives. This connection with the natural world encourages mindfulness, helping us to be more present and appreciative of the world around us.

Capturing the beauty of nature with your camera is relaxing and restorative.
Take your time to focus and connect with the natural world around you. Observe the colours, patterns and textures surrounding you. Embrace the feelings that being in nature provides. Let your camera capture the emotions of the moment.
