Such an inspiring and surreal (!) night at the LA1 Shorts LA1 Shorts film festival at The Dukes in Lancaster.

I was fortunate to have one of my cyanotype animations included in this year’s screening. There was huge variety in the selected films and it was brilliant to see such inclusive programming.

My cyanotype animation was made from over 1000 frames printed by hand, using footage I shot around Woodland Trust - Smithills Estate. It was created over many months at my studio for Pyramid Eyes track ‘Sunrise Over Old Earth’ from his album ‘Awake In Deep Time’, out now on Castles In Space subscription library.

I really enjoyed meeting the other film makers and film industry partners at the festival.

A huge thank you to Steve and Will for making the day so welcoming for newbies, and for all the work that goes into making LA1 Shorts happen. Happy 10 years of fabulous film festivalling!

Congratulations to everyone whose films were screened. 🎬

✨Selected✨

The music video I made for Pyramid Eyes fab track Sunrise Over Old Earth has been selected for the LA1 Shorts film festival. It’ll be screened at the The Dukes in Lancaster on 30 May with all the other selected films.📽️🍿

Huge thanks to Steve, Will and the LA1 Shorts team for this opportunity. It’s great to be part of their 10th year anniversary screening milestone. 🙌🏻 Follow their page LA1 Shorts for more news about the festival and some special competitions.

The cyanotype animation reflects the slow historic photographic process that is core to my creative practice. It’s made from over 1000 frames printed by hand (not AI). Original footage also filmed by me around Rivington Woodland Trust - Smithills Estate in Chorley, Lancashire.

The track is from Pyramid Eyes album ‘Awake In Deep Time’, out now on Castles In Space subscription library.

Rory (he/him) said:

“Over the last few years, the world has started to crack down on allowing transgender people (particularly trans women) to play on sports teams. This, combined with a constant transphobic media narrative about trans people playing sports makes it daunting to approach a team full of people, who may not understand what being trans is, or have misguided ideas. Liverpool Trans and Enby FC is such a great safe space where I feel like I can be 100% myself! Everyone is so great and it’s nice to have that sense of community. We are just normal people. We live next door to you, we’re standing next to you in a supermarket queue, you walk past us on the street every day and mostly have no clue. Please don’t believe the transphobic media onslaught about us, we just want the right to live happy and private lives. And play a bit of footie!”

Level Playing Field was originally a creative commission for the Williamson Art Gallery that responded to the 2024 LS Lowry project ‘Going to the Match On Tour’.

Since September I’ve been on the Lightlab programme with Light up the North and Lightpool, Light Night Wigan and Durham Lumiere.

It’s been an absolutely brilliant entry into the light art world, and has really inspired me to keep experimenting with how/if I can translate my paper-based cyanotype work into a light art environment (and how to do that in an ecologically sound way). The most beneficial element of the whole programme was meeting the other artists and creative practitioners taking part – it’s opened up a whole new network of contacts and led to some potential exciting future collaborations. I’ve also had access to a brilliant set of advisors and mentors including Liz West, Ronan Devlin, Lauren Devere, Overcliff Media and Chloe Rodham. Above all I’ve learned that this artform looks easy but is incredibly hard - it takes time, budget and patience.

My light art practice falls into two areas:

1) Use of cyanotype animation, including in micro and unexpected places.

2) My ‘light you can feel’ concept developed during Lightlab, which involves building cyanotype light artworks designed and developed with and for blind and visually impaired audiences.

👉🏻 Read more about what I’ve been up to during the programme and R&D on my website. https://www.margebradshawphotography.co.uk/blog/completion-of-lightlab-cpd-programme

With any luck you’ll see some of my work at light art festivals in the future.🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

My portrait of Kat, coach of Liverpool Trans and Enby FC has been announced today as a winner of The British Journal of Photography’s Portrait of Britain Vol.8.

I’m so pleased for Kat and the club.

From 12 January until early February, high streets, airports and shopping centres across the UK will transform into a national art gallery. In partnership with JCDecaux UK, 100 winning portraits from thousands of submissions will be displayed on digital screens throughout the country.

Please let me know if you spot any of Kat!

Kat told me: “I started Liverpool Trans and Enby FC because I wanted to be a part of a community where I wasn’t the minority. I didn’t want the pressure of negotiating pronouns or battling for gender neutral terms on the pitch; I didn’t want to feel isolated for being non-binary, or to be the only trans player. It’s important for the trans community to see that we exist as a group, as a majority in a space, on a pitch, and we can have fun and socialise as ourselves.”

Liverpool Trans and Enby FC is a grassroots football club ran by and for trans and non-binary players. The portrait was taken as part of a creative commission I worked on in response to the 2024 tour of LS Lowry’s ‘Going to the Match’, which was on display in ‘Level Playing Field: stories from Liverpool Trans and Enby FC’ at the Williamson Art Gallery & Museum in Birkenhead.

At a time when trans people face increasing hostility and discrimination, it feels more urgent than ever to create space for their stories to be seen and heard.

✨Thank you Kat, for sharing your story and allowing me to take the portrait.✨

The commission was supported by The Lowry, Salford, Arts Council England, The Law Family Charitable Foundation and the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation.

The work also features alongside 200 shortlisted images in the Portrait of Britain Vol. 8 photobook, published by Bluecoat Press (out now).

With thanks to BJP, judges and sponsors: We Present, Rene Matic, Sophie Parker, Dennis Morris, Claire Rees, Alice Zoo, Mick Moore, Tom Booth Woodger and Vivienne Gamble.

👉🏻Please donate to the club if you can. All the information you need is on my website along with the official announcement from the British Journal of Photography. https://www.margebradshawphotography.co.uk/blog/portrait-of-britain-shortlist-volume-8-nzwzp
