Why do interior detail photos matter? In a scroll full of ultra‑wide shots trying to make every room look huge, important details literally disappear into the distance.

Close-up images do something different:

* They bring a space to life, highlighting textures, finishes and styling that wide angles simply gloss over.
* They signal care. When buyers see thoughtful touches, they instinctively feel the whole property has been well looked after – which builds trust before the survey even happens.

15 years in and I still get a kick out of real estate photography - and not just for the perfectly lit living rooms.

Why? Because every shoot is a mini-adventure: new people, new stories, and usually smaller jobs that let me hop between more houses and meet more clients. Networking? Sure, but honestly, I’m here for the friendships, the random life lessons, and the occasional bonus perk.

Case in point: last week I ended up doing a quick bread photoshoot as a favour. I learned a couple of baking tricks, took photos of sourdough, and walked away with free cake. Win-win-win.

Those weird little detours, the chats, the laughs, the unexpected skills are what keep the job fun after all these years. Plus the tea and cake. My advice? Always say yes!

Why I never leave home without one:

A) Great emergency key light for quick fill or focus assist.
B) Ultra-compact — barely takes space in an already-full kit bag.
C) Handy for gear checks (inspect sensor, lenses, ports for dust).
D) Most run DC meaning flicker-free lighting for video.

Yes, most flashlights are a hard point source, and don't have tuneable colour temperature — but if you have space for something bigger, video-specific options by manufacturers like SmallRig are now hitting the market that solve some of these problems... Damn, I seem to have talked myself in to another purchase whilst writing this post 🤣
