Much of the year so far has been dedicated to the rear echelons of my photography. The recent prolonged spell of high pressure has not helped and spring has come and gone with very little in the way of atmospheric conditions. This is the way though. Last year we had three amazing days during the peak colour and it was a lot to ask to replicate that. I did however manage a few days in Scotland which is always welcome. This image was captured in the ancient woodlands of the Ardnamurchan Peninsula.

Coppiced woodland in Worcestershire. The frosty mornings are at an end. School holidays and a solid week of printing have kept me busy during the latter parts of February. Outside now, the local parks are full of crocuses, the Starlings are back nesting in the eaves of my neighbours house and colour is starting to return to the landscape. I have some plans for Spring but as one project comes to an end, a new one will see me exploring different areas. The work starts shortly and I am looking forward to getting the miles on my feet and waiting for those great conditions.

An early start on the Malvern Hills. As I made my way above the tree line in the dark, this Silver Birch immediately stood out against the diffused backlighting from the moon. I took a few images with the phone and decided off the back of those that it was worth investing some time into.

I have started the process of documenting the Malvern Hills in more depth. Recent wanderings have lead me onto the mid slopes of the main peaks. These areas offer some nice vantage points of the higher ground and I have already noted a few areas to return to when the sun is in a more favourable position.

I’ve spent a few evenings recently walking the Malvern Hills. In that time I’ve witnessed some dramatic evening light and incredible conditions with the low swirling mist. Despite all of that, this rather subdued image with the soft light on the Worcestershire Beacon is the one that I am happiest with.

With it's co-dominant stems, which most likely evolved from a practice called Pollarding, this Oak has stood guard over Shrawley Wood for longer that anyone on the planet has been alive. I was gutted today when walking into the woodland only to discover that it had been toppled during the recent storms. With frost on the ground and the still air, I photographed it for possibly the last time. It's strange to get sentimental about these things, but for over 4.5 years, and having dedicated hundreds of hours to this area of the world, I had built a comfortable familiarity with the surroundings that I suppose I never expected to change. To see such a brutal and unexpected alteration to a landscape I know well is unnerving, but ultimately, provides just another example of the pure violence that nature can unleash in the most serene of environments.

I was not overly optimistic this morning. The forecast of snow was also delivered in conjunction with both a 100% Low and high cloud base. The lack of ambient light was not ideal but I have talked myself out of going out before so if nothing else, I would just enjoy the walk and see what happened. A 90 minute round trip across the Malvern Hills from Wyche cutting, across Pinnacle hill and back was a decent workout. Navigating the ice covered paths was fun in parts and I shall definitely remember to take my spikes next time.

One of the most photographed locations in Scotland, and for good reason. Buachaille Etive Mor is the first thing that greets all visitors as you approach Glen Coe from Rannoch Moor.

While my main effort was to try and capture winter images with autumnal indicators in them, I did opt for one with purely Winter components during the recent snow fall.

With the hard frost, the initial aim this morning was to make my way to the Malvern Hills as I figured it would offer up a few decent options to choose from in terms of subject. This plan went to pieces though as soon as I reached the outskirts of Worcester and saw the cloud on the horizon. Instead, I made a quick decision to try a local woodland that contains some ancient sweet chestnut trees. Early attempts at an image really faltered. The snow on the ground coupled with the darkness of the trees was causing me problems controlling the contrast. It was only after the sun really started to get higher in the sky and the ambient light improved I was able to photograph something worth while. Then it was just a case of waiting for a cloud to move in front of the sun to soften the light.

A scene that I've photographed before. It is the first time in the 4.5 years since I have been back in Worcester that I've witnessed snow in the local woodland. I was determined when I set out this morning to try and capture scenes with both the winter snow and the remaining autumnal colour present.
