Harlech Castle crowns a sheer rocky crag overlooking the dunes far below – waiting in vain for the tide to turn and the distant sea to lap at its feet once again.
No further drama is really required but, just in case, the rugged peaks of Snowdonia rise as a backdrop. Against fierce competition from Conwy, Caernarfon and Beaumaris, this is probably the most spectacular setting for any of Edward I’s castles in North Wales. All four are designated as a World Heritage Site.
Harlech was completed from ground to battlements in just seven years under the guidance of gifted architect Master James of St George. Its classic ‘walls within walls’ design makes the most of daunting natural defences.
Even when completely cut off by the rebellion of Madog ap Llewelyn the castle held out – thanks to the ‘Way from the Sea’. This path of 108 steps rising steeply up the rock face allowed the besieged defenders to be fed and watered by ship.
Harlech is easier to conquer today. An incredible ‘floating’ footbridge allows you to enter this great castle as Master James intended – for the first time in 600 years.

The Asian Elephant (Eliphas Maximus) is unfortunately on the endangered species list

Asian elephants are smaller than their African cousins, and Intelligent and sociable, they live together in family groups and are usually led by the oldest female. Their most distinctive feature is of course their long trunks which can be very powerful, but also very delicate when needed to forage for food.
They need to eat a lot and can spend two thirds of a day feeding. They eat grasses, tree bark, roots, leaves and the like.
Their ivory tusks help with digging, stripping bark from trees and fighting. Not all male Asian elephants have tusks! But both males and females can have tushes, which are incisor teeth that grow to just below the bottom lip.

New quay Harbour always looks great and as a bonus it has an awesome ice cream shop right by it.

A handsome chimpanzee , did you know that chimps have 98% identical genetic make up as humans!

Chimps each have individual features, just like we do, including skin colour, hair cover and facial shapes. They also have opposable thumbs and toes which they can use to grip tools, long arms for ‘knuckle walking’ and reaching, and extreme strength which helps them moving through canopies.

They live in large, complex social groups, which are essential for their ability to learn and develop. They’re entirely affected by the groups they line in, from where and what they eat, who they mate with and how much power they’ve got. They are led by an alpha male who controls the group, settling fights, choosing where to feed and having first choice of a female mate. Bonding is an important part of living within a group, and chimps bond by grooming each other, similarly to how humans shake hands or hug!

The Two Kings statue at Harlech Castle in northwestern Wales. Sculpted by Ivor Roberts-Jones and unveiled in 1984, the sculpture depicts the Mabinogion story of Branwen, a lament of the folly and carnage of war. In the sculpture, the figure of Bendigeidfran, bearing the body of his nephew Gwern, symbolises the sorrowful burden that love can be. Harlech Castle in Harlech, Gwynedd, on the northwest coast of Wales next to the Irish Sea, was built by Edward I in the closing decades of the 13th century as one of several castles designed to consolidate his conquest of Wales
