The church was full, but somehow silent. Each person wrapped in reverence, yet deeply connected. Behind the epitafios, generations stood shoulder to shoulder, candles flickering like whispered prayers.
As a photographer, I tried to stay invisible, but moments like these pull you in. In Anogeia, faith isn't just personal; it's beautifully, powerfully shared.
Μέσα στον ναό, το φως των κεριών αγκάλιαζε πρόσωπα γεμάτα κατάνυξη. Ο Επιτάφιος στο πλάι, στολισμένος με αγάπη και χέρια που ξέρουν την παράδοση.
Ήμουν εκεί με τη φωτογραφική στο χέρι, μα σύντομα έγινα κομμάτι της στιγμής. Στα Ανώγεια, η πίστη δεν καταγράφεται απλώς. Ζει και μοιράζεται από καρδιά σε καρδιά.

In Anogeia village of Crete, Easter isn’t just celebrated—it’s felt deep in the heart.
On Good Friday, or as Greeks say, the Big Friday, the epitafios procession winds through the village with reverence, as hymns echo against the mountains.

As a photographer, I came to capture moments—but ended up being embraced by them. The locals welcomed me like family, offering fanarakia (the traditional sweet) and generous shots of raki, their smiles just as warm as the glow of the Holy Flame.

Ι do believe I can handle hot weather. I was raised in the Mediterranean. I lived in a country of the desert for four years. But still, the sun always surprises me. As the heatwave in Greece calmed down the day before, I caught myself sighing with relief.
