Good evening from Lake Dystos with a female Red-footed Falcon (Μαυροκιρκίνεζο / Rotfußfalke / Cernícalo patirrojo / Faucon kobez / Ala doğan / 紅腳隼), photographed a few years ago during a fascinating and unexpected excursion.

This elegant migratory falcon is now travelling north toward its breeding grounds in Eastern Europe and Asia, making spring sightings in Greece especially exciting. A beautiful surprise from the wetlands of Evia. 📷✨

Happy Sunday!

A fresh shot from today at Spata fields, featuring the charming Whinchat (Saxicola rubetra), a regular spring migrant across Greece.

These elegant little travelers are currently on their way from sub-Saharan Africa to their breeding grounds further north and in upland parts of the country, stopping in open fields like this to rest and refuel.

Often perched on low shrubs or fence posts, they scan for insects before darting out with quick precision, always a joy to observe during migration.

Despite beeing that common my last post of thie beauty has been 5 years ago!

Hello with the beautiful and distinctive D’Arnaud’s Barbet (Trachyphonus darnaudii) at the entrance of Masai mara, Kenya!

A loud voice in a small, striking package. These birds are almost always heard before they’re seen, often perched low and out in the open.

This individual stayed just long enough for a clean frame, showing off that bold pattern and heavy bill.

Moments like this are why patience in the field always pays off.

Tiny but unforgettable 🐾

This little beauty is the Kirk's dik-dik, photographed in Lake Nakuru. Standing just 30 - 40 cm tall at the shoulder, it’s the smallest antelope you’ll find in Kenya - delicate, alert, and perfectly adapted to its surroundings.

Fun fact: while the dik-dik holds the “smallest in Kenya” title, the true global champion is the Royal antelope from West Africa, which is even smaller at around 25 - 30 cm!

Moments like this remind me that in the wild, greatness doesn’t always come in large sizes. 🌿

Good morning! ☀️

Sharing today one of East Africa’s most dazzling birds, the Superb Starling (Lamprotornis superbus), captured in the Masai Mara, Kenya.

Though commonly seen across the region, from Somalia and Uganda to Tanzania and Ethiopia, its iridescent colors never fail to impress. These social birds are often on the move, foraging or heading toward water, and can form lively groups of 40+ individuals.

During the dry, non-breeding season, they frequently mingle with other starling species like Hildebrandt’s Starling and the Greater Blue-eared Glossy Starling, creating vibrant mixed flocks that are a joy to observe.

Nature’s beauty is often right in front of us, even in the most “common” species.

Good morning from Lake Naivasha 🌿✨

Sharing this striking Blacksmith Lapwing (Vanellus armatus), captured at the beautiful Sopa Lodge.

This species ranges from Kenya through central Tanzania and across much of southern Africa. Its name comes from its distinctive metallic “tink, tink, tink” call - just like a blacksmith striking an anvil 🔨

While many wetland birds are facing declines, the Blacksmith Lapwing is actually thriving. Its remarkable ability to adapt - even nesting in tiny, temporary wet patches - has helped it succeed where others struggle.

A perfect reminder: survival isn’t about being the strongest or the smartest, but about adapting to change.

Happy Sunday! Sharing a special sighting from today at the flooded fields of Spata - the elusive Wryneck (Jynx torquilla / Στραυολαίμης). Though it behaves quite differently, it’s actually a member of the woodpecker family.

Its name comes from its remarkable ability to twist its head nearly 180°. When threatened, especially near the nest, it performs a striking defense display - hissing and contorting its neck in a snake-like motion, which has even earned it the nickname “snake-bird.”

A moment that lasted just 2-3 seconds… and then it was gone forever.

The elusive Sri Lanka wood-pigeon appeared silently in front of us at Horton Plains, no warning, no second chance. Just enough time to raise the camera, press the shutter, and witness one of Sri Lanka’s most secretive endemics before it vanished back into the forest.

With fewer than 2,600 recorded observations on eBird, this species is a true prize for any birder. Classified as Vulnerable, it survives only in the montane forests of Sri Lanka, making every encounter incredibly rare and unforgettable.

This is what keeps us going: not just the photo, but the fleeting encounter, the adrenaline, the privilege of sharing a moment with something so rarely seen.

Gone in seconds… but a memory for a lifetime.

Good morning from Kenya’s Lake Nakuru 🌅

A gentle moment with the laughing dove, a delicate resident of Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. Its close cousin, the spotted dove can be recognized by its striking chequered necklace.
