Swallows, Black-Winged Stilts and a lone gull creating a right cacophony of sound at the salt lakes in Alykes this morning! And to think I nearly let the rain put me off coming!

Playing with natural light 💛 - It's been a pretty miserable day here on Zakynthos, but it's given me the perfect opportunity to go through some of the ever growing folders of photographs I have collecting on my computer.... I hope these brighten up your day wherever you are!

Hiking on Zakynthos

Hiking on Zakynthos - A beautiful hike in the area of Gyri, despite the viewpoint being in the clouds today! Luckily there was no shortage of alternative picnic spots…

Balkan Wall Lizard

Lizard Watch ☀️ - It’s the time of year when wildlife on the island is becoming more obvious. Butterflies are flitting, birds are singing, and lizards are basking, and my senses go into overdrive, noticing. A few years back, my husband built me the hotel of my dreams 🥰… A now rather wonky and battered-looking Bug Hotel that stands at the edge of his carefully tended grassy bit. It’s a construction that has withstood the challenges of the seasons, but which I have to admit rather lacks the bugs and insects I hoped would reside there… Judging by rather healthy-looking lizards that like to bask, in and outside the hotel, I’m guessing they are possibly the reason!

Another morning spent watching the birds as the sun rose over the salt flats. This week there was a lot of bird activity at the far side, with plenty of Small Egrets doing their thing, a lone Great Egret looking like Billy no mates, several heron, a rather confident cormorant, to name just a few, but the one that tickled me most was the kingfisher! Watchable through binoculars, but too far off for a decent photograph… Some moments are just meant to be enjoyed in the there and then ❤️

Alykes Salt Flats
February 22nd, 2026

Bird Watch 2026 - I finally did it! I finally got to the salt flats at Alykes as the sun rose, and it did not disappoint. The hardest part was closing the door behind me as the dogs watched on, wondering where on earth I was going without them! Unfortunately for them, it’s going to be a weekly jaunt, I can barely look them in the eyes…

Arriving at the salt flats just as the sun was rising was truly magical. The water was like a mirror, the air was still, and the bird-sounds were wonderful, and very different to the dawn chorus I’m used to hearing in the mini-mountains when out with the dogs. There were gulls causing a proper raucous, Little Egrets making noises that didn’t quite match their daintiness and a variety of other smaller birds’ songs. I have to say I was surprised by the rowdiness of the egrets; they seemed very clumsy and competitive compared to the heron that was patiently waiting for a tasty morsel nearby, but too far off for me to get a decent photograph.

You really can’t beat being surrounded by nature for settling the mind and soul!

Kiliomenos/ Agalas Area 14km
February 22nd 2026

Hiking On Zakynthos ☀️ - So far this winter, we have avoided hiking in the Agalas area of the island. To see an area that we've hiked for so many years, offering us such lush, green and truly magical trails, reduced to a burned-out, barren landscape really didn’t appeal to us.

However, living on an island means a limited number of hiking options, offering us the degree of difficulty we need to prepare for mainland hiking. And with our annual trip looming ever closer and our fitness levels not being quite where we would like them to be at this time of year, we decided to venture into the area to tackle sweat-inducing trails. The ‘carrot’ in front of us, apart from being more fit for our trip, was a beautiful area ideal for a picnic at the halfway point and with a hidden viewpoint behind some trees!... The promise of a very nice picnic spot is always motivation enough 😆

Unfortunately, we couldn’t avoid the burned areas, and it was hard to remember it as it was, only last year. As beautiful as the area still is, in a different sort of way (how can being out in nature not be a beautiful experience?), this is not a hike I would offer during the summer, when my aim is to encourage people to slow down and immerse themselves in nature. However, I thought that followers might still enjoy seeing a different side of Zakynthos...
