📸I filmed a promotional video here many years ago. This stage, where Bai Liusu (白流蘇) and Fan Liuyuan (范柳源 ) from Eileen Chang's (張愛玲) novels took place, reminded me of two unforgettable lines from "Love in a Fallen City":
1.) "Life is a magnificent robe, crawling with fleas."
「生命是一襲華美的袍，爬滿了蚤子」
2.) "Suffering is long, life is short."
「長的是磨難，短的是人生」
Eileen Chang was perhaps a pessimist; she believed life is a coexistence of splendor and corruption; glory and turmoil. Beauty, grandeur, and excitement, once gone, leave only constant vulgarity, filth, and desolation. Happiness is fleeting; the rest is just wasting time and emptiness! A helpless life, endless sorrow, only hoping for a touch of tenderness and compassion!
